Overview
At the heart of Split lies Diocletian’s Palace, a sprawling UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s still very much alive—with shops, cafés, and apartments tucked inside its centuries-old stone walls. Wandering its narrow alleyways feels like stepping back in time, with surprises waiting around every corner. The waterfront Riva promenade adds a modern touch, perfect for coffee, people-watching, and soaking up the sea breeze.
Beyond the historic center, Split has a laid-back, beachy feel. Locals and visitors alike flock to Bacvice Beach for swimming and sunbathing, while nearby Marjan Hill offers scenic hiking trails and panoramic views. You’ll also find a growing food scene here, from fresh seafood taverns to stylish wine bars.
Whether you are diving into history, lounging by the water, or catching a ferry to nearby islands, Split delivers a blend of culture and coastal relaxation that’s hard to beat. It’s a city that feels both timeless and totally alive.

Your day in Split begins with a visit to the heart of the city—Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century, this palace is one of the most impressive Roman structures still standing today. It’s not just a historic site, but an active part of the city, with shops, cafés, and homes nestled within its walls. Wander through its maze-like alleys and squares, and don’t miss the Peristyle, the central courtyard surrounded by majestic columns.
Tip: Visit the Cellars of Diocletian’s Palace located beneath the palace for an intriguing glimpse into the Roman era and to see how the palace was once used as storage. The cellars are also where part of Game of Thrones was filmed!

For an unforgettable view of Split, climb to the top of the Saint Domnius Bell Tower, located within Diocletian’s Palace. The tower is one of the oldest structures of its kind in the world and offers spectacular views over Split’s Old Town, the coastline, and nearby islands. The climb is a bit steep, but the panoramic view is absolutely worth it!
Tip: Bring comfortable shoes for the climb, as the steps can be narrow and winding. The best time to visit is early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds and to catch the soft light of sunrise or sunset.

After exploring the historic sites, take a leisurely walk along the Riva Promenade, Split’s bustling seafront. Lined with palm trees, cafés, and restaurants, the Riva is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere. It’s also a great spot for people-watching, as locals and tourists alike stroll along the promenade enjoying the sea breeze.
Tip: Stop at one of the local cafés for a traditional Croatian coffee or a refreshing drink, and soak in the views of the Adriatic Sea.

A short walk from the main square within Diocletian’s Palace takes you to the Temple of Jupiter, a well-preserved Roman temple dedicated to the god Jupiter. The temple has a strikingly preserved structure, and its peaceful surroundings make it a great spot for reflection. Don’t miss the chance to see the Golden Gate and the surrounding architecture, which are fascinating examples of Roman artistry.
Tip: Look out for the Sphinx located near the temple’s entrance—this ancient artifact was brought to Split from Egypt by Diocletian.
For a taste of local life, head to Split’s Green Market (Pazar), just a short walk from the Riva Promenade. This vibrant market is the best place to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of Split. You’ll find fresh fruits, vegetables, local cheeses, olive oil, and handmade goods. It’s also an excellent place to buy some fresh souvenirs.
Tip: Try some paški sir, a traditional Croatian cheese from the nearby island of Pag, or sample fig jam and local olives.

After exploring the city, head to Bacvice Beach, Split’s most famous beach, just a short walk from the city center. Known for its shallow waters and sandy shoreline, it’s perfect for a swim or just lounging in the sun. Bacvice is also famous for the game picigin, a fun local water sport where players try to keep a small ball from touching the water.
Tip: If you prefer a quieter spot, explore some of the more secluded beaches around Split, such as Kasjuni Beach or Firule Beach.

If you have a bit more time and want to experience the nearby islands, consider taking a ferry from Split to either Hvar or Brac. The ferry ride is quick (around 30 to 60 minutes) and offers beautiful views of the Adriatic Sea. Both islands are known for their beautiful beaches, historic sites, and charming towns.
Tip: Ferries run regularly from the port, so you can easily catch one in the morning and return by the afternoon.

For a taste of Croatian art, visit the Mestrovic Gallery, which is dedicated to the works of Ivan Mestrovic, one of the most renowned sculptors of the 20th century. The gallery is housed in the artist's former residence and showcases a stunning collection of his sculptures, as well as his personal drawings and paintings. The gallery is surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of the sea.
Tip: The gallery is a short bus ride or a 20-minute walk from the city center, making it an easy stop during your day in Split.

No visit to Split is complete without sampling some delicious Croatian food. Split offers a fantastic selection of restaurants, from casual eateries to upscale dining. Don’t miss the chance to try Pasticada, a slow-cooked beef stew, or Grilled Fish and Seafood Risotto for a taste of the Mediterranean.
Tip: For dessert, try a Krostule, a traditional Croatian pastry that’s perfect with a cup of coffee.

End your day with a visit to Marjan Hill, Split’s green oasis that offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding islands. You can either hike or drive up to the summit, where you’ll be treated to a spectacular sunset over the city and the sparkling Adriatic Sea. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your time in Split.
Tip: If you’re short on time or don’t want to hike, take a drive up to the summit and enjoy the views from the comfort of your car.
