Overview
Skomer Island, a jewel off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales, is a protected National Nature Reserve and a site of international importance for its spectacular wildlife. This uninhabited island, characterized by its dramatic sea cliffs, rugged coastline, and rolling inland plateau, is a critical breeding ground for an astounding array of seabirds, including the largest colony of Atlantic Puffins in southern Britain. Its pristine marine environment and unique terrestrial ecosystem make it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
A visit to Skomer is an immersive journey into a thriving natural sanctuary where humans are merely respectful observers. Beyond the bustling bird colonies, the island is home to unique flora, a rare species of vole, and a significant grey seal population. Skomer offers an unparalleled opportunity to connect with raw, untamed nature, providing a serene yet vibrant encounter with one of the UK's most significant wildlife havens.
Experience the sheer delight of observing Atlantic Puffins up close. From mid-April to late July, thousands of these charismatic birds nest in burrows across the island, often unconcerned by human presence, allowing for incredible photo opportunities.
Tip: Puffins are most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Stay on designated paths to avoid disturbing their burrows.
While primarily a day trip destination, those fortunate enough to secure an overnight stay (limited availability) can witness the incredible spectacle of Manx Shearwaters returning to their burrows at night. Their eerie calls fill the air as hundreds of thousands of birds fly in from the sea.
Tip: This unique experience requires booking the island's limited accommodation well in advance.
Hike the island's well-maintained, designated walking trails that circumnavigate the island and traverse its interior. Paths offer spectacular cliff-top views, opportunities to observe nesting birds, and insights into Skomer's unique landscape and history.
Tip: Wear sturdy, comfortable footwear suitable for uneven, potentially muddy paths. The entire loop is about 4 miles (6.4 km).
Keep an eye out for Atlantic Grey Seals often seen basking on the rocks or swimming in the waters around the island. The surrounding Marine Conservation Zone is also rich in wildlife, with common sightings including porpoises and dolphins.
Tip: Bring binoculars for the best viewing opportunities of marine mammals and distant bird colonies.
Beyond puffins, Skomer is home to vast colonies of other seabirds. Observe thousands of Guillemots, Razorbills, and Kittiwakes nesting precariously on the cliff ledges, creating a cacophony of sound and a mesmerizing spectacle.
Tip: Designated viewpoints offer excellent vantage points for observing these cliff-nesting birds without disturbance.
In spring and early summer, the island transforms with vibrant displays of wildflowers, including bluebells and red campion. Appreciate the unique treeless landscape, shaped by wind, salt, and the island's vast rabbit population.
Tip: The bluebell display is typically best in May/early June. Remember not to pick any flowers.
