Overview
Old San Juan is the heart of the city, with cobblestone streets, pastel-colored buildings, and centuries-old forts overlooking the sea. Landmarks like El Morro and San Cristóbal offer incredible views and rich history dating back to the 16th century, while plazas and cathedrals give the city a distinctly European feel—set against a tropical backdrop.
Beyond its historic charm, San Juan pulses with music, nightlife, and flavor. The city’s food scene is a delicious mix of Puerto Rican classics like mofongo and lechón, along with inventive takes on island ingredients. Whether you are sampling local rums, dancing to live salsa, or shopping in colorful boutiques, there’s always something to discover.
Beautiful beaches are never far, and San Juan’s coastline invites you to relax, surf, or just soak in the sun. With easy access to rainforests, mountains, and nearby islands, it’s also a great base for exploring more of Puerto Rico. But even within the city, the mix of old and new, calm and celebration, makes San Juan endlessly captivating.

Begin your day by exploring the historic Old San Juan, a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and centuries-old architecture. The area is easy to walk around, and it’s home to some of the most iconic attractions in the city. As soon as you step off your cruise, head straight to the historic heart of San Juan for a stroll through this charming district.
Tip: Take a leisurely walk along Calle del Cristo, one of the most iconic streets in Old San Juan, lined with shops, cafés, and beautiful colonial buildings.

One of the highlights of San Juan is Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a 16th-century fort that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and has stood as a sentinel for centuries. Explore the impressive structure, walk along its thick walls, and take in the breathtaking views of the harbor and the ocean. The fort also has fascinating exhibits about Puerto Rico’s military history.
Tip: Bring your camera! The panoramic views of the ocean and San Juan are absolutely stunning, especially from the top of the fort.

Just a short walk from El Morro, Castillo San Cristóbal is another iconic fort that dates back to the 18th century. It’s larger than El Morro and was designed to protect San Juan from land attacks. The fort has several levels to explore, including underground tunnels and scenic terraces that offer great photo opportunities.
Tip: If you are short on time, consider visiting either El Morro or San Cristóbal, as they’re both expansive and require some time to explore.

After exploring the forts, head to Paseo de la Princesa, a beautiful promenade along the waterfront. This lovely walkway is lined with trees, statues, and fountains, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. It leads to the Puerta de San Juan, a historic gate that once served as the entrance to Old San Juan.
Tip: If you’re visiting in the afternoon, Paseo de la Princesa is especially charming as the street lights create a romantic atmosphere.

Located in the heart of Old San Juan, the San Juan Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in the Americas, dating back to 1521. The cathedral features stunning colonial architecture and a peaceful atmosphere inside, making it a must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts.
Tip: If you’re interested in local culture, the cathedral is an excellent spot to sit and soak in the history and serenity of Old San Juan.
View this stunning, bright blue mansion, which is the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico. While entrance is restricted, its exterior and the adjacent Puerta de San Juan (San Juan Gate) are a must-see.
Tip: Walk down the colorful Calle del Cristo toward La Fortaleza for a famous photo opportunity with the flags and the blue colonial wall.

If you’re craving some beach time, Condado Beach is just a short ride from Old San Juan and offers a relaxing spot to unwind and enjoy the sun. This beach is known for its clear water and golden sands, making it perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or simply relaxing by the ocean. If you are into water sports, you can also rent jet skis or try paddleboarding.
Tip: The beach tends to be more crowded, especially during the cruise season, so arrive early for a more peaceful experience.

Puerto Rican cuisine is a delicious mix of Spanish, African, and Taino influences, and San Juan is the perfect place to sample some authentic dishes. Head to a local restaurant for a taste of mofongo (mashed plantains with garlic and pork), lechón (roast pork), or arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas). For a quick bite, you can also grab a bocadillo (Puerto Rican sandwich) from a food stand.
Tip: For a truly authentic experience, dine at La Mallorquina, a local café in Old San Juan, famous for its mallorcas, a delicious sweet pastry.

Take a moment to walk along the city walls of Old San Juan, which were built to defend the city from pirates and invasions. These impressive walls surround the old town, offering an interesting look into the city’s history. You can easily walk along the walls and enjoy the views of the coastline, the city, and its vibrant architecture.
Tip: The walls are also a great spot for some quiet moments and photography—particularly at sunset when the city is bathed in golden light.

To end your day in San Juan, head back to Castillo San Felipe del Morro or the Paseo del Morro for a breathtaking sunset. The setting sun casts vibrant colors over the sea, the fort, and the city’s skyline, providing the perfect final photo op of your time in San Juan.
Tip: The sunset views from El Morro are unforgettable, but be sure to arrive early to find a good spot to watch the colors change over the water.
