Overview
Once a bustling port in its own right, Leith has reinvented itself as a vibrant district full of character. Stroll along the Water of Leith, explore repurposed warehouses, and pop into cozy pubs, indie shops, and award-winning restaurants—including some of Scotland’s best.
The Royal Yacht Britannia, now permanently docked here, gives visitors a glimpse into royal maritime history. And just up the road, Edinburgh awaits with its castles, cobbled streets, and dramatic skyline—easy to reach, but far enough away to let Leith shine on its own.
There’s an artsy, local energy to this part of the city, where tradition meets trend in the most welcoming way. Whether you’re sipping whisky by the harbor or browsing local galleries, Leith is a relaxed and refreshing way to experience Scotland.

Start your day with a visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia, the former royal yacht of Queen Elizabeth II. Explore the elegant state rooms, the crew’s quarters, and the royal decks to get a glimpse of life on board. The yacht offers a fascinating insight into royal life at sea.
Tip: Purchase tickets in advance to ensure availability and enjoy a self-guided tour with audio commentary.

Next, head to the Ocean Terminal, a vibrant shopping center located by the waterfront. It features a variety of shops, cafés, and entertainment options. Spend some time exploring the dynamic exhibitions, local art displays, and enjoy a meal with views of the harbor.
Tip: Check the schedule for any special events or festivals during your visit.

Take a leisurely stroll along The Shore, Leith’s picturesque waterfront area. The Shore is lined with charming restaurants, cafés, and bars, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Don’t miss the chance to try some local seafood at one of the waterfront eateries.
Tip: Visit in the evening to experience the vibrant nightlife and beautiful sunset views.

Take a shuttle, taxi, or tram into the city center to explore the iconic Edinburgh Castle, perched high on an extinct volcano. Afterwards, descend the historic Royal Mile, which runs between the castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, stopping at ancient closes (alleys), charming shops, and pubs.
Tip: To see the famous One O'Clock Gun fired from the castle, plan to be inside the castle walls well before 1:00 PM (except on Sundays) and check the schedule upon arrival.

For a spectacular outdoor activity, take a taxi or bus towards Holyrood Park and hike up Arthur's Seat. This ancient volcano offers unparalleled panoramic views over Edinburgh Castle, the city skyline, and the Firth of Forth.
Tip: Wear sensible, gripping shoes as the path can be steep and muddy, especially near the summit. Allow approximately 2 hours for a round trip from the base.

Nature lovers will enjoy a walk along the Water of Leith Walkway, a scenic path that follows the river through the heart of Leith. The walkway offers beautiful views, peaceful surroundings, and the chance to spot local wildlife.
Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a camera to capture the stunning scenery.

Leith is home to some of Edinburgh’s best craft breweries. Visit a local brewery to sample a variety of craft beers and learn about the brewing process. Many breweries offer tours and tastings, making it a fun and educational experience.
Tip: Try a taproom tour to visit multiple breweries and taste a wide range of beers.

End your day with a delightful meal at one of Leith’s top restaurants. From casual eateries to fine dining establishments, Leith offers a diverse range of culinary experiences. Enjoy traditional Scottish dishes or international cuisine, paired with a glass of local whisky or wine.
Tip: Make a reservation in advance, especially if you plan to dine at a popular restaurant.
