Sandakan, which was formerly known as Elopura, is the second biggest town in Sabah region in Malaysia. The town is located on the Northeastern side of the island of Borneo on the East coast and is host to the administrative capital of the division that goes by the same name. Sandakan started experiencing commercial growth in 1879, when the British North Borneo Company built a settlement there that saw it develop into a trading center. It was destroyed in World War II and later rebuilt. Currently, the town is one of the main ports for trade in the country and a hub for eco-tourism.
