Lemnos, Greece Cruise Port

Sailing through the Aegean Sea is anything but ordinary, and even less ordinary is the spectacular cruise port of Lemnos (or Limnos), Greece. The 8th largest of the Greek islands, Lemnos is part of the North Aegean region with just under 17,000 residents total. With a Mediterranean climate and more than 30 sandy beaches for relaxing or water sports, Lemnos is also known for its lush hillside pastures which help create sheep and goat milk cheese and yogurt. In fact, produce is abundant here, including Muscat grapes, which are used to produce a unique dry table wine. Like much of Greece, Lemnos is rich in Greek mythology, as the island was once sacred to Hephaestus, the god of metallurgy; other tales are a little darker in nature. Whether you go for the history, artefacts, food, or the beaches, you’ll enjoy some of our favorite experiences while cruising to Lemnos, Greece:

  • On an island with multiple beaches from which to choose, Thanos Beach is a standout. Not far from Myrina, the beach is large enough for everyone to enjoy the clear waters for swimming or snorkeling, and it has several nearby options for eating and drinking.

  • History lovers will want to visit the remains of Poliochni (or Poliochne), which may have reached its peak between 2700-2000 B.C. and is considered one of Europe’s most ancient cities. The ruins which include fortification walls, drainage systems, and what's left of what may have been the world's first parliament.

  • For more archaeology and history, visit Hephaistia or the Ancient Theater, named for Hephaestus. Dating from between the late 5th and early 4th century B.C., sitting on its rocky steps will transport you back in time. You'll also get a lovely view of the sea from the top.

  • The medieval Castle of Myrina is the Aegean Sea's largest fortress. Its construction was ordered in 1186 A.D. by Byzantine emperor Andronicus Komnenos and building continued by the Venetians in the 13th century. Today the castle is open for public visits, and the view from afar after dark is especially fantastic.
