Aldabra, Seychelles Cruise Port

Aldabra is the second largest coral atoll in the world. It is located in the Aldabra Group of islands situated in the Indian Ocean. They are part of the Seychelles. The island is extremely isolated and uninhabited. Aldabra has not been exploited by humans, and its island fauna is distinct. This includes the Aldabra Giant Tortoise. Aldabra is a designated World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is one of the two World Heritage Sites designated by UNESCO in Seychelles. Aldabra was historically referred to as Al-Khadra or Al-Hadra. From as early as the 16th century the islands were known to the Arabs and Persians who are attributed to have given them their names. Explorers were interested in the islands especially because they wanted to exploit the species of turtle, fish and tortoise. Some of the most notable features of the Aldabra group of islands are:

  • The Aldabra Group of Islands has one of the world’s largest coral atoll. It is 34 kilometers long and is a known World Heritage Site that is acknowledged by UNESCO mainly due to its physical and natural significance. This makes it a site of importance to the heritage of humanity.

  • It is among the most interesting spots in Seychelles due to the fact that over 100,000 giant tortoises are found at the location. This is an attractive aspect that is sure to appeal to nature lovers which makes it ideal to take a cruise to Aldabra port.

  • Aside from the giant tortoises, there are a multitude of other animals and birds that visitors can find. These include but is not limited to migratory birds, frigate birds, giant crabs, turtles and the white-throated rail. The latter is a flightless bird that is rare in the Indian Ocean.

  • A new bird was recently discovered on Aldabra. In May 2013, The Alcedo vintsiodes was the first Madagascar Kingfisher confirmed in Seychelles that was accepted as a new species located in Seychelles. Cruising to the port presents a good opportunity to view the newly discovered species.
