West Point Island offers wild beauty and abundant wildlife in the Falklands.

Overview
West Point Island, part of the remote Falkland Islands archipelago in the South Atlantic, is a true highlight for expedition cruises. Originally known as Albatross Island, it's famous for hosting one of the largest colonies of black-browed albatross in the world, nesting alongside vibrant rockhopper penguins. This privately owned island, still operated as a traditional sheep farm by the Napier family, offers an intimate and authentic encounter with the Falklands' incredible wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Cruise ships typically use Zodiacs or tender boats to bring passengers ashore for a truly immersive experience.
For cruise passengers, West Point Island is an unparalleled opportunity for up-close wildlife viewing in a stunningly pristine environment. The island's dramatic sandstone cliffs, tussock grass landscapes, and the sheer abundance of seabirds create an unforgettable spectacle. A visit here promises a unique blend of natural wonder, genuine Falklands hospitality, and a rare glimpse into life on a remote South Atlantic island.
The undeniable main attraction is the vast, mixed colony of Black-browed Albatrosses and Southern Rockhopper Penguins at "Devil's Nose," a promontory on the island's west side. You can walk along paths right next to these magnificent birds, observing their nesting behaviors, interactions, and the incredible sight of albatrosses soaring on the updrafts from the cliffs.
Tip: Walk slowly and quietly to avoid disturbing the birds. Bring a telephoto lens for your camera, but also enjoy the incredible close-up views you'll get without one. The penguins often nest right among the albatrosses.
After your wildlife encounter, experience the renowned Falklands hospitality at the Napier family's farmhouse. Many tours include a welcoming stop for homemade tea, coffee, and delicious cakes and biscuits, often baked fresh by the family. This provides a charming insight into island life.
Tip: This is a unique cultural interaction and a delightful break. Don't miss the opportunity to chat with the island's residents.
From the landing beach, enjoy a leisurely hike across the island to reach the albatross and penguin colony. This walk takes you through open, rolling countryside, offering scenic views and a chance to observe other Falkland Island birds and the island's unique flora.
Tip: Wear sturdy walking shoes suitable for uneven terrain, which can be tussock grass and sometimes muddy. The walk typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour one-way, but a drive is sometimes offered.
Keep an eye out for other fascinating bird species found on West Point Island. This can include Striated Caracaras (also known as "Johnny Rooks," known for their curious and sometimes mischievous behavior), Cobb's Wrens, Turkey Vultures, and various geese and ducks.
Tip: The striated caracaras are particularly bold and may approach visitors, so keep your belongings secure.
While in the bay or during Zodiac transfers, watch for marine mammals in the surrounding turquoise waters. Dolphins (especially Peale's dolphins) are frequently observed, and you might also spot fur seals or sea lions visiting the shores.
Tip: Have your binoculars ready as you approach and depart the island.
Take time to appreciate the dramatic scenery of West Point Island itself. Its high sandstone cliffs, including Cliff Mountain (the highest sea cliff in the Falklands), plunge into the South Atlantic, creating a rugged and powerful landscape that is home to the vast bird colonies.
Tip: The views from the cliffs, especially near the albatross colony, are spectacular. Be mindful of strong winds and uneven ground when near cliff edges.
