Overview
Omoa is a remote and tranquil village on the island of Fatu Hiva, in the magnificent Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia. Tip: The village is very small and can be explored on foot in about an hour.
One of the most famous and challenging hikes in the Marquesas is the 10-mile trail from Omoa to the village of Hanavave (Bay of Virgins). The all-day trek takes you through lush rainforest and over a mountain pass, rewarding you with spectacular views of the fjord and the unique "Stone Sentinels" rock formations in Hanavave.
Tip: This hike is strenuous and requires a high level of fitness. A guided tour is strongly recommended.
With a local guide, you can seek out the ancient Marquesan petroglyphs carved into rocks near the village. These carvings are remnants of the island's pre-European history and offer a fascinating glimpse into the culture and mythology of the ancient Marquesan people.
Tip: Ask locals or your guide for directions, as the carvings are not always easy to find.
Fatu Hiva is celebrated for its incredible artistry. Local artisans are famous for their wood carvings and the traditional art of making tapa cloth from the bark of trees. The village is an excellent place to buy these beautiful, handcrafted souvenirs directly from the creators.
Tip: Take cash with you. Many artisans do not have credit card machines, though some may accept US dollars or Euros.
The waters of the bay in Omoa are calm, clear, and inviting. Take some time to go for a swim or do some snorkeling directly from the shore near where your tender lands. The marine life is not as abundant as on a coral reef, but the clear water is refreshing.
Tip: Bring your own snorkeling gear as there are no rental facilities.
Simply sit back and appreciate the breathtaking scenery. The towering volcanic cliffs and the lush green valleys of Fatu Hiva are a sight to behold. From the vantage point of the bay, you can truly appreciate the island's immense, untamed beauty.
Tip: Fatu Hiva is often called the "Garden of the Marquesas." Bring your camera for incredible landscape shots.
