Tip: Pack a picnic to enjoy on the beach, and be sure to read the interpretive signs to learn about the island's unique history and significance.
No visit to Nanaimo is complete without trying its namesake dessert, the Nanaimo Bar. This no-bake treat, consisting of a wafer crumb base, custard filling, and a chocolate ganache topping, is a Canadian classic. You'll find it in bakeries and cafes throughout the city.
Tip: Seek out a local bakery for an authentic, fresh-made Nanaimo Bar, and perhaps sample a few different variations to find your favorite.
Just a short drive from the port is the Coombs Old Country Market, a unique and quirky destination famous for the goats that graze on its grass-covered roof. This market offers a variety of local goods, fresh produce, and specialty foods in a truly memorable setting.
Tip: This is a popular spot, so be prepared for crowds. Take your time to explore the various shops and don't forget to grab a photo with the famous goats on the roof!
Venture outside the city to MacMillan Provincial Park, home to the awe-inspiring Cathedral Grove. Here, you can walk among giant, ancient Douglas fir trees, some over 800 years old. This is one of the most accessible stands of old-growth forest in the region.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes for the trails and be aware that this can be a busy spot, so arrive early if possible to enjoy a quieter experience.
Take a leisurely stroll along the scenic Harbourfront Walkway, a 4km path that offers beautiful views of the marina, seaplanes, and the surrounding mountains. Connect to the walkway from the downtown area, where you can also explore the independent boutiques of the Old City Quarter.
Tip: The walkway is a great way to orient yourself to the city and find local restaurants or cafes for a break.
