Overview
Sitting at the confluence of the Rio Negro and Amazon River, Manaus feels like a city carved out of the jungle. It played a major role during the rubber boom of the 19th century, which left behind striking architecture like the ornate pink-and-white Teatro Amazonas opera house. Today, Manaus is a lively, bustling gateway to one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.
The city itself has plenty to explore—markets filled with exotic fruits and Amazonian fish, riverfront promenades, and cultural centers that dive into Indigenous heritage and the city’s unique blend of cultures. The Meeting of the Waters, where the dark Rio Negro and sandy-colored Amazon flow side by side without mixing, is just one of many natural wonders nearby.
From Manaus, excursions into the rainforest open up a world of discovery—spotting pink river dolphins, hiking through dense jungle trails, or staying at eco-lodges surrounded by untouched wilderness. It’s a place where civilization and nature collide in the most fascinating ways.

The Museu da Amazônia (MUSA) is a showcase of the region’s biodiversity. Located in a forested area, it offers guided tours of native flora and fauna, cultural exhibits, and a spectacular Observation Tower that rises above the canopy.
Tip: Climb the tower for breathtaking views of the rainforest and bring binoculars for birdwatching.

Run by the Brazilian Army, the Zoológico Do CIGS is home to Amazonian species such as jaguars, giant otters, and macaws. It’s both a conservation site and an educational experience.
Tip: Visit in the morning when animals are most active and crowds are lighter.

The Amazonas Theater (Teatro Amazonas) is Manaus’s crown jewel, built in 1896 during the rubber boom. Its Renaissance-style architecture and opulent interior make it one of the most unique opera houses in the world—right in the middle of the rainforest.
Tip: Guided tours are available daily, and if you’re lucky, you may catch a live performance.

This conservation park offers forest trails, an amphitheater, and a library, making it a peaceful escape within the city. It’s a great place to spot wildlife and learn about local ecosystems.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and insect repellent—the trails are natural and can be humid.

Built in the late 1800s as a rubber baron’s mansion, the Palácio Rio Negro now serves as a cultural center with period displays and gardens. It reflects the grandeur of Manaus’s golden age.
Tip: Guided tours provide fascinating insights into the city’s history and architecture.

One of the Amazon’s most famous natural phenomena, the Meeting of Waters occurs where the dark Rio Negro and sandy-colored Rio Solimões run side by side without mixing for several kilometers.
Tip: Take a boat excursion to see the striking contrast up close—it’s best viewed in the afternoon light.
