A sunny west coast town on the Big Island.

Overview
Kailua-Kona, often simply called "Kona," is a vibrant coastal town located on the sunny, dry leeward side of Hawaii's Big Island. Historically a sleepy fishing village and a retreat for Hawaiian royalty, it has evolved into a bustling hub for tourism, boasting a lively waterfront, charming shops, and a relaxed, aloha-infused atmosphere. The town serves as a primary gateway to the island's diverse landscapes, from its famous coffee plantations nestled on the slopes of Hualālai volcano to its dramatic black sand beaches and rich historical sites.
Kona is particularly famous as the finish line for the grueling Ironman World Championship triathlon, held annually. Its warm, calm ocean waters are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and various water sports, while the fertile volcanic slopes above the town are home to the renowned Kona Coffee Belt. This blend of natural beauty, agricultural heritage, and historical significance makes Kailua-Kona a captivating destination that offers both adventure and relaxation under the Hawaiian sun.
Walk along Ali'i Drive, the main waterfront street in Kailua-Kona. This lively stretch is lined with historic sites, shops, restaurants, and resorts. You can visit the historic Mokuaikaua Church (Hawaii's oldest Christian church) and Huliheʻe Palace (a former vacation home for Hawaiian royalty), offering a glimpse into the island's past.
Tip: Enjoy the sunset from one of the many oceanfront restaurants along Ali'i Drive. Parking can be challenging, especially in the evening.
Take a boat tour to Kealakekua Bay, a protected marine life conservation district known for its incredibly clear waters and abundant marine life. It's considered one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in Hawaii, teeming with colorful fish and coral. The Captain Cook Monument is also located here.
Tip: Access to the monument area is restricted to guided tours or by permit, so a boat tour is the best way to experience the bay. Look out for spinner dolphins in the bay!
Venture into the uplands above Kona, known as the Kona Coffee Belt, and take a tour of a working Kona coffee farm. Learn about the unique growing conditions, the harvesting process, and sample some of the world's finest and most sought-after coffee directly from the source.
Tip: Many farms offer free tours and tastings. Some popular options include Kona Coffee Living History Farm and Greenwell Farms.
Spend time at Kahalu'u Beach Park, a popular and easily accessible snorkeling beach just south of Kailua-Kona. Its calm, shallow waters and abundance of reef fish make it ideal for families and beginners. You're almost guaranteed to see a variety of fish and green sea turtles (honu) here.
Tip: Parking can fill up quickly, so arrive early. Be respectful of the marine life and do not touch the turtles or coral.
Explore Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, a sacred place of refuge for ancient Hawaiian lawbreakers. This beautifully preserved historical site features reconstructed temples, royal grounds, and exhibits that offer deep insights into Hawaiian culture, history, and spiritual practices.
Tip: Allow a couple of hours to fully explore the park. Wear comfortable walking shoes and be respectful of the sacred nature of the site.
For an unforgettable nocturnal adventure, participate in a manta ray night dive or snorkel tour. Operators take you to specific offshore locations where bright lights attract plankton, which in turn attracts large manta rays. Watching these gentle giants glide gracefully through the water is a mesmerizing experience.
Tip: Book this tour in advance, as it's very popular. Wetsuits are usually provided as the water can be cool at night.
