Overview
Killarney National Park, established in 1932, is Ireland's first national park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, encompassing over 25,000 acres of breathtakingly diverse landscapes in County Kerry. From the majestic Lakes of Killarney (Lough Leane, Muckross Lake, and Upper Lake) to the towering peaks of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, ancient oak and yew woodlands, and cascading waterfalls, the park is a natural wonderland. It is home to Ireland's only native herd of red deer and a rich variety of flora and fauna, making it a significant ecological site.
Beyond its natural beauty, the park is steeped in history, featuring medieval castles, monastic ruins, and grand Victorian estates. It offers a perfect blend of wilderness adventure, cultural exploration, and serene beauty, making it one of Ireland's most cherished and visited destinations. Killarney National Park provides an immersive experience into Ireland's wild heart, where legends, history, and nature intertwine.
Explore Muckross House, a magnificent 19th-century Victorian mansion, and its meticulously maintained gardens. While there's a fee for guided tours of the house interior, the extensive gardens (including a Rock Garden, Sunken Garden, and Stream Garden) are free to explore and are particularly vibrant in spring and early summer with rhododendrons and azaleas.
Tip: Consider also visiting the nearby Muckross Traditional Farms for a glimpse into rural Irish life from the 1930s and 40s.
Head to Ross Castle, a picturesque 15th-century tower house situated on the shores of Lough Leane. Take a guided tour to learn about its history or simply enjoy the views. From Ross Castle, you can also take a short boat trip to Innisfallen Island to explore the atmospheric ruins of a 6th-century monastery and spot some of the park's resident red deer.
Tip: The boat trip to Innisfallen Island is highly recommended for its historical significance and scenic beauty. Check boat schedules and prices.
Embark on a walk to Torc Waterfall, a stunning 20-meter (60-foot) high cascade nestled amidst lush woodlands. The waterfall is particularly impressive after heavy rainfall. You can continue climbing stairs near the waterfall for elevated views of the lakes and mountains.
Tip: The waterfall is easily accessible from a nearby car park (about a 5-minute walk) or as part of a longer walk from Muckross House (around 2.5 km).
Undertake the iconic journey through the Gap of Dunloe, a dramatic glacial valley. This can be done by hiking, cycling, or by taking a traditional "jaunting car" (horse-drawn carriage). Many tours combine a boat trip through the Lakes of Killarney with a jaunting car ride through the Gap, offering a full-day adventure.
Tip: This is a full-day excursion. Book combined tours in advance, especially during peak season, as it's one of the most popular experiences.
Rent a bicycle in Killarney town and explore the extensive network of well-maintained paved tracks throughout the park. Popular routes include the Muckross Lake Loop, paths around Ross Island, and the Knockreer Circular Walk, offering stunning lake and mountain views.
Tip: Cycling allows you to cover more ground than walking and reach more remote scenic spots. Maps are usually provided with rentals.
Start your park exploration at Killarney House & Gardens, located conveniently close to Killarney town. This recently restored estate features an interpretive exhibition about the National Park's flora, fauna, and history, along with beautiful formal gardens. It's also home to the main Visitor Centre, where you can get maps and information.
Tip: Entry to the exhibition is free and it's a great place to gain an overview of the park before venturing out.
