Overview
The Isle of Noss is a small, uninhabited island located just off the east coast of Bressay, in the Shetland Islands archipelago of Scotland. Renowned as one of Europe's most spectacular wildlife sites, Noss is primarily famous for its magnificent 'Noup' cliff, a towering gannet colony that provides a breathtaking spectacle of literally tens of thousands of seabirds nesting and soaring during the breeding season.
Designated as a National Nature Reserve by NatureScot, Noss offers unparalleled opportunities for close-up observation of myriad seabird species without causing disturbance. Its dramatic red sandstone cliffs, exposed to the full force of the North Sea, create an ideal habitat for these avian populations. While visitors cannot land directly on Noss (except for the warden's beach for access to the reserve hut), boat trips around the island provide an unforgettable, immersive experience of this vibrant and noisy seabird city.
The absolute highlight of Noss is viewing the Noup cliff, home to an astonishing colony of over 25,000 breeding pairs of Gannets. From a boat, you'll be mesmerized by the sheer numbers of birds, their constant comings and goings, and the cacophony of sound.
Tip: Bring a good camera with a telephoto lens if possible. The smell is as unforgettable as the sight and sound!
Beyond the Gannets, Noss hosts enormous numbers of other breeding seabirds. Look for Guillemots and Razorbills tightly packed on narrow ledges, Kittiwakes clinging to crevices, Fulmars gliding on updrafts, and Shags nesting near the waterline.
Tip: Your boat captain or guide will point out different species and their nesting preferences. The diversity is incredible.
From late April to early August, Atlantic Puffins arrive at Noss to breed. While not as numerous as Gannets, you can often see these charming "sea parrots" bobbing on the water, flying in and out of their burrows on the grassy slopes above the cliffs, or diving for fish.
Tip: They are easier to spot on calmer days when they are closer to the water.
The waters around Noss are frequently visited by Grey Seals and Common Seals, often seen hauled out on rocks or swimming gracefully alongside the boat. The seals often rest on the skerries (small rocky islets) around the coast.
Tip: Listen for the distinct calls of the seals, especially the larger Grey Seals.
The geological formations of Noss are as impressive as its birdlife. The boat trip allows you to fully appreciate the towering, red sandstone cliffs that characterize the island's eastern side, shaped by centuries of erosion from the North Sea.
Tip: The contrast of the red cliffs against the blue sea and white guano-stained rock is visually stunning.
Most boat trips include expert commentary from a local guide or skipper, who will share fascinating insights into the ecology of the seabird colonies, the unique geology of Noss, and its history as a National Nature Reserve.
Tip: Ask questions! These guides are a wealth of knowledge about the Shetland Islands' natural heritage.
