Overview
Les Saintes (often referred to simply as "The Saintes") is a small volcanic archipelago located south of Guadeloupe, in the Lesser Antilles. Composed of two main inhabited islands, Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas, along with several uninhabited islets, this group is renowned for its magnificent bay (often ranked among the most beautiful in the world), its idyllic beaches, crystal-clear waters, and its peaceful, authentic atmosphere.
The Saintes archipelago offers a unique blend of French, Mediterranean, and Caribbean influences, visible in its colorful architecture, delicious cuisine, and the culture of its inhabitants, the Saintois, descendants of Breton settlers. It is a favored destination for water sports enthusiasts, beach relaxation, and historical discoveries.
Explore Fort Napoléon, a historic 19th-century fortification offering breathtaking views of Les Saintes Bay and the surrounding islands. The fort also houses a botanical garden dedicated to succulents and iguanas.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes for the climb and enjoy the exceptional panoramas for your photos.
Discover the famous Pain de Sucre Beach, an iconic beach in Les Saintes, nestled at the foot of a volcanic hill. Its calm and transparent waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, offering a true natural aquarium.
Tip: Access to this beach can be via a small path or by boat. It's a perfect place to observe marine life.
Spend a relaxing moment on Pompierre Beach, a large cove lined with coconut trees, renowned for its fine sand and shallow waters. It's a very pleasant beach for families and for swimming.
Tip: Carbets (shelters) are often available to protect from the sun, and iguanas can be spotted in the vicinity.
For the more active, the ascent of Morne du Chameau, the highest point of Terre-de-Haut (309 meters), offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire archipelago, Guadeloupe, and even Dominica on a clear day.
Tip: The hike can be demanding, especially in the afternoon. Bring water, a hat, and good walking shoes. The Chameau Military Tower is at the summit.
Stroll through the picturesque streets of Terre-de-Haut village, with its colorful houses, artisan shops, and charming cafes. Soak in the relaxed atmosphere and savor the local cuisine.
Tip: Taste "Tourment d'amour," a small local pastry typical of Les Saintes.
The waters around Les Saintes are renowned for their rich marine life. In addition to Pain de Sucre Beach, many spots offer exceptional opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving to discover colorful corals and a multitude of tropical fish.
Tip: Boat trips with snorkeling stops are often offered from Terre-de-Haut port.
