Overview
The IJsselmeer (pronounced "EYE-sel-meer") is a large freshwater lake in the central Netherlands, formerly a vast saltwater inlet known as the Zuiderzee (Southern Sea). This remarkable transformation occurred in the 20th century with the construction of the Afsluitdijk (Enclosure Dam) in 1932, which disconnected it from the North Sea. Since then, the former Zuiderzee has been gradually desalinated by the inflow of the IJssel River (a branch of the Rhine), creating the IJsselmeer.
Today, the IJsselmeer is a vital part of the Dutch landscape, serving as a freshwater reservoir, a buffer against North Sea storms, and a hugely popular area for watersports, including sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. Its shores are dotted with picturesque, historic port towns that once thrived on the Zuiderzee's maritime trade, now offering a glimpse into a rich past linked to water and commerce.
The IJsselmeer is an ideal location for sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing due to its shallow, relatively calm waters and consistent winds. Many towns along its shores offer rental facilities and sailing schools.
Tip: Consider taking a short sailing lesson or renting a small boat to experience the vastness of the lake firsthand.
Explore Enkhuizen, a beautifully preserved former Zuiderzee port town. Its highlight is the Zuiderzee Museum, which offers a fascinating indoor and outdoor experience depicting the history, culture, and daily life of the Zuiderzee region before and after the enclosure.
Tip: The outdoor museum (Buitenmuseum) is particularly engaging, with historic buildings and costumed interpreters. Allow several hours for a full visit.
Experience the impressive Afsluitdijk (Enclosure Dam), the 32-kilometer-long dike that transformed the Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer. You can drive across it, or for a unique perspective, walk or cycle along designated paths, stopping at the monument and visitor center.
Tip: The Afsluitdijk Monument offers panoramic views and information about this incredible feat of Dutch engineering. Be prepared for strong winds.
Step back in time by visiting Urk, a former island that retains a strong sense of its traditional fishing community and distinct dialect, even though it's now connected to the mainland by land reclamation.
Tip: Wander through its narrow streets, visit the lighthouse, and try fresh fish from a local stall. Urk maintains its conservative, religious character.
Explore the charming town of Hoorn, another former VOC (Dutch East India Company) trading port on the IJsselmeer. Admire its beautiful historic harbor, grand merchant houses, and potentially the replica of the VOC ship "Halve Maen."
Tip: Hoorn also has a fascinating Westfries Museum that delves into its Golden Age history.
For keen cyclists, follow sections of the IJsselmeer Cycle Route (part of the LF2), a long-distance cycling path that circumnavigates the lake. It offers picturesque views of the water, polders, and charming villages.
Tip: Rent a bike in one of the towns and cycle a manageable section, enjoying the flat terrain and scenic stops.
