Overview
Hopedale, known as Agvituk ("place of the caribou") in Inuktitut, is a small, remote Inuit community located on the coast of northern Labrador, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It holds the unique distinction of being the administrative capital of Nunatsiavut, the self-governing Inuit region of Labrador. Established in 1771 as a Moravian mission, Hopedale is one of the oldest settlements in Labrador and retains a significant Moravian architectural heritage, including the oldest wooden building in Canada east of Quebec.
