Overview
Holy Loch (Scottish Gaelic: An Loch Sianta/Seunta) is a sea loch, or sea inlet, located on the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, opening into the Firth of Clyde. Its name is believed to derive from a 6th-century association with early Christian churches, notably the site where Saint Munn is said to have arrived from Ireland. The loch has a rich and varied history, from early boat-building at Robertson's Yard to its significant role as a Royal Navy submarine base during World War II.
Most famously, Holy Loch served as a controversial but pivotal United States Navy Polaris nuclear submarine base during the Cold War from 1961 to 1992. Today, this tranquil loch has returned to its natural beauty, serving as a hub for sailing and a gateway to the stunning landscapes and outdoor activities of the Cowal Peninsula and the wider Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.
Explore the modern Holy Loch Marina, which now occupies the site of the former US Navy base. While it's a bustling hub for sailing, take a moment to reflect on its significant Cold War past. Information about the US Navy's presence is often available locally, and there's a monument in nearby Dunoon's Castle Gardens commemorating the American presence.
Tip: The marina offers a pleasant spot to watch boats and perhaps enjoy a coffee at the on-site cafe.
Journey to the village of Kilmun on the shores of Holy Loch. Visit Kilmun Parish Church and the Argyll Mausoleum, a site of worship believed to date back to the 6th or 7th century. It became the traditional burial place for the chiefs of Clan Campbell.
Tip: The church and mausoleum offer a deep dive into Scottish history and religious heritage. Check opening times for guided tours of the mausoleum.
Embark on an enchanting walk through Puck's Glen, a spectacular gorge walk located just north of Kilmun. Named after Shakespeare's mischievous fairy, this deep, damp woodland gorge is a truly magical place, with enchanting waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, and ancient ferns.
Tip: Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear as the paths can be wet and uneven. The walk is relatively short but involves some steep sections and steps.
Visit the magnificent Benmore Botanic Garden, a 120-acre garden set in a stunning mountainside location. Pass through an impressive avenue of giant redwoods (some over 150 years old) and discover a world-famous collection of plants, including over 300 species of rhododendrons.
Tip: Allow ample time to explore the various sections of this expansive garden. There's a visitor center and café on site.
Take advantage of Holy Loch's tranquil waters. The Holy Loch Marina and Holy Loch Sailing Club offer opportunities for sailing, kayaking, and fishing. Rent a boat, take a lesson, or simply enjoy paddling on the loch.
Tip: Inquire locally about equipment rentals or guided fishing tours. The loch is home to a variety of fish including trout and salmon.
Holy Loch and its surrounding areas are rich in wildlife. Look out for otters, seals, and a variety of seabirds and waders along the shores and mudflats, particularly at the Holy Loch Local Nature Reserve or the nearby Broxwood Local Nature Reserve.
Tip: Bring binoculars for optimal viewing. Early mornings or late evenings are often the best times for spotting animals.
