Overview
Fathom Five National Marine Park is Canada's first National Marine Conservation Area, located at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula in Tobermory, Ontario. This unique freshwater park encompasses 22 square kilometers of Lake Huron, protecting a rich collection of 22 historic shipwrecks that lie remarkably preserved in the cold, clear waters. Beyond its underwater heritage, the park is celebrated for its distinctive geological formations, most notably Flowerpot Island with its iconic rock pillars, and a series of rugged islands, submerged caves, and limestone cliffs. Tobermory serves as the gateway to the park, where visitors can embark on excursions to explore its unique features. Embark on a glass-bottom boat tour from Tobermory's Little Tub Harbour. These tours glide over the crystal-clear waters, allowing you to view several well-preserved 19th-century shipwrecks, such as the Sweepstakes and City of Grand Rapids, resting just a few meters below the surface.
Tip: This is the most popular way to see the shipwrecks without getting wet. Tours often include a pass by the iconic Big Tub Lighthouse.
Take a boat tour that includes a drop-off on Flowerpot Island, one of the park's most famous attractions. Hike the trails to see the iconic "flowerpot" rock pillars, visit the historic light station and its small museum, and explore sea caves and grottoes.
Tip: Allow at least 2-3 hours to explore the island thoroughly. Wear sturdy walking shoes, as trails can be uneven. There is a small Parks Canada fee for landing on the island.
Fathom Five is a world-renowned destination for freshwater scuba diving, with over 20 shipwrecks ranging in depth and complexity. Several shallow wrecks (like the Sweepstakes) are also accessible for snorkeling.
Tip: If you are a certified diver, consider booking a charter from Tobermory. For snorkelers, some boat tours offer dedicated shipwreck snorkeling experiences.
See the historic Big Tub Lighthouse, located at the entrance to Big Tub Harbour. This picturesque lighthouse, built in 1885, offers scenic views of the harbor and is often included in boat tours.
Tip: It's accessible by road in Tobermory if you prefer to visit independently, offering great photo opportunities.
Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) in Tobermory and explore the calm, clear waters of the harbor or nearby sheltered bays. This provides a peaceful way to experience the park's beauty from water level.
Tip: Check local rental shops in Tobermory. Always be aware of boat traffic, especially in the harbor.
