Overview
Just south of Los Angeles, Long Beach has its own laid-back vibe and plenty to explore. Stroll the scenic shoreline, hop on a harbor cruise, or check out the historic Queen Mary—an iconic ocean liner turned floating museum and hotel.
The city also offers a great mix of art, food, and local flavor. Wander through the colorful murals of the East Village Arts District, grab fish tacos along the waterfront, or visit the impressive Aquarium of the Pacific with the whole family.
Whether you are here for beach days, boat tours, or just soaking up the mellow Southern California atmosphere, Long Beach is a fun and friendly stop that’s easy to enjoy at your own pace.
855 Harbor Scenic Drive, Long Beach, CA 90802
Start your day with a visit to the iconic Queen Mary, an old luxury ocean liner now permanently docked in Long Beach. Once a transatlantic passenger ship, it is now a hotel, museum, and historic site. Explore the ship’s grand art deco interiors, visit the on-board museum to learn about its fascinating history, or take a ghost tour to hear eerie tales about its past.
Tip: If you’re short on time, opt for a guided tour to explore the highlights of the Queen Mary, including the engine room, staterooms, and dining areas.
Next, head to Rainbow Harbor and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the waterfront. This area is home to some of Long Beach’s best sights, including the Shoreline Village, a charming boardwalk with shops, restaurants, and stunning views of the harbor and coastline.
Tip: Stop by one of the many outdoor cafés for a refreshing drink or snack, and take in the beautiful scenery of sailboats, yachts, and ocean liners.
For a fun and educational experience, make your way to the Aquarium of the Pacific, one of the largest aquariums in the United States. Home to over 11,000 animals, this aquarium showcases diverse marine life from the Pacific Ocean, including sharks, sea otters, and penguins. It’s an excellent stop for families and animal lovers.
Tip: Don’t miss the outdoor sea lion exhibit and the stunning coral reef tank, which is a highlight of the aquarium’s exhibits.
Enjoy the festive seaside atmosphere at Shoreline Village, a collection of colorful shops, specialty stores, restaurants, and snack bars built on a picturesque peninsula overlooking the harbor and the lighthouse. It’s a perfect place to grab a souvenir or a quick bite.
Tip: Take a walk out onto the nearby pier or rent a swan boat at Rainbow Lagoon Park for a peaceful activity with great photo opportunities.
If you’re in the mood for some sun and sand, Alamitos Beach is a great spot to unwind and soak in the Californian sunshine. Located just west of the downtown area, Alamitos Beach is quieter and less crowded than the main Long Beach shoreline. It’s perfect for a peaceful walk along the water or a relaxing afternoon.
Tip: Bring a towel, sunscreen, and a good book, and spend some time enjoying the beach atmosphere.
For a different view of the city, hop on a harbor boat tour. These tours give you a chance to see the bustling port from the water, where you’ll pass by the Long Beach marina, docked ships, and possibly even spot sea lions lounging on the docks. Many boat tours offer information about the history of the harbor and the ships that dock there.
Tip: A guided boat tour is a great way to relax and learn about the waterfront without exerting too much energy.
Take a scenic drive or taxi to the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier for sweeping views of the Long Beach coastline, the city skyline, and the open ocean. It's a great spot for fishing, walking, or enjoying a casual snack.
Tip: Visit the pier early in the morning for a serene start to your day or near sunset for spectacular photographic opportunities.
No visit to Long Beach would be complete without indulging in the local cuisine. The city offers a diverse array of dining options, ranging from casual eateries to fine dining. For a classic Long Beach experience, enjoy seafood at one of the waterfront restaurants. Try some fresh oysters, clam chowder, or a grilled fish taco while taking in the view.
Tip: For a unique culinary experience, consider dining at The Attic, a popular local spot known for its Southern-style comfort food, or head to Parker’s Lighthouse for upscale seafood with stunning views of the harbor.
If you’re a fan of live theater, make sure to check out the International City Theatre located in the Long Beach Performing Arts Center. This professional theater company offers a variety of performances throughout the year, from contemporary plays to classic dramas.
Tip: Check the theater’s schedule before your visit and buy tickets in advance to catch a show during your stay.
