Kona, Hawaii Cruise Port

Kona, like Hilo, is on the Big Island of Hawaii, but on the western side where the weather is slightly better. Here you’ll find some of Hawaii’s best beaches. The water is calm, sheltered from winds by Mauna Loa, the largest volcano on Earth. Around the Kona area are many attractions that highlight the history of Hawaii. There is a historic village, a beautiful park and the spot where the British explorer James Cook became the first European to discover Hawaii. Listed below are a handful of our favorite sights and sounds for Kona, Hawaii:

  • Kona is known for its rich coffee. Visit one of the Kona coffee plantations like Mountain Thunder, an organic producer that offers tours of their mill and roaster, along with free tastings.

  • Visit the Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. This was a site where criminals would come to be absolved of their crimes and reenter society. At this park you’ll learn about this ancient Hawaiian custom.

  • Snorkel through the crystal clear waters off the Kona coast to see beautiful coral and green turtles. You might also catch a glimpse of dolphins swimming in pods.

  • Visit the Historical Kailua Village to see a temple constructed by King Kamehameha, the island’s first ruler. You can also shop here and find some great restaurants.
