Cusco, Peru Cruise Port

A mix of old and new world experiences, the South American cruise port of Cusco (Cuzco), Peru is steeped in history at an elevation of about 11,200 feet. Near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range, it's both the capital of the Cusco Region as well as the Cusco Province. It was once the capital of the Inca Empire and is often considered a gateway to Machu Picchu and other Inca-heavy attractions; however, Cusco has enough of its own sights to make it far more than just a quick waypoint on the way to somewhere else. Now a World Heritage Site, it receives nearly two million visitors annually and is designated as the Historical Capital of Peru. The delightful city with multiple ways to spell its name (including Qusqu and Cozco); listed below are a handful of our favorite experiences when cruising to Cusco, Peru:

  • Qorikancha was once the richest temple in the empire; today, well-crafted stonework is all that remains, still considered some of the finest Inca architecture in Peru. The ruins form the base of a colonial church and Santo Domingo convent; around the outside of the courtyard are paintings depicting the life of St. Dominic and God's guard dogs.

  • The "nerve center" of modern Cusco, the Plaza de Armas features two flags and bustling residents selling their wares. Look for the quiet pedestrian alleyway of Loreto and its historic Inca walls to access the plaza.

  • La Catedral del Cuzco was created from blocks originally used in the nearby Inca site of Sacsaywamán. Begun in 1559, it took nearly a century to complete and is the one of the city's greatest collections of colonial art. You'll also find the oldest surviving painting in Cusco, which represents the residents of the city during the great earthquake of 1650, praying for it to stop.

  • Tourist favorite Faces of Cusco is designed to help travelers get familiar with Cusco and all it offers. This group can provide travel tips, set up a beer tasting tour, or get you into chocolate making – or just hang out and watch some sports with a nice pint.
