Costa Maya, Mexico Cruise Port

Located 100 miles South of Playa del Carmen, Costa Maya is very close to Belize and offers travelers a secluded Mexican escape. This small town became an especially popular destination for cruise passengers in the last ten years as a beach club opened and many big name bars opened locations. There are also a set of Mayan ruins that are a short trip away. The cruise port of Costa Maya, while not a powerhouse, offers a quiet day in the sun exploring Mexico. Listed below are a few of the best things to do when cruising to Costa Maya, Mexico:

  • Visit Chacchoben, a Mayan ruin that dates back to 350 AD. This site hasn’t been entirely excavated so there are still mysteries as to what lies below the ground.

  • Hit the beach. Head to the Almaplena Eco Beach Resort to beat the crowds near the port. Here you’ll find a perfect beach for a day of summer fun.

  • This area has a small Italian population, so try to get the best of both the Italian and Mexican cultures at Luna de Plata, a restaurant with great Italian food.

  • Visit Bacalar, a Spanish fortress that was built to protect the area from pirate attacks and indigenous people. Then head to the Cenote Azul, which is a 300 foot spring with clear water.
