Tip: Utah Beach had fewer casualties than Omaha, and its museum offers a great overview of the American involvement.
See the well-preserved German Gun Battery at Longues-sur-Mer, located between Omaha and Gold Beaches. This coastal artillery battery, which fired on the Allied invasion fleet, offers a tangible insight into the formidable German defenses of the Atlantic Wall.
Tip: You can walk around the bunkers and see the original guns, providing a vivid sense of the scale of the fortifications.
Explore Arromanches-les-Bains (on Gold Beach), home to the remains of one of the Mulberry Harbors. These incredible prefabricated artificial ports were floated across the English Channel and assembled to provide vital supplies and equipment for the Allied invasion after D-Day.
Tip: The D-Day Landing Museum in Arromanches provides excellent information on the engineering feat of the Mulberry Harbors.
If your tour allows, visit the Juno Beach Centre, Canada's official memorial to the D-Day landings. This museum and cultural center honors the Canadian forces who landed on Juno Beach and tells their story, as well as the broader story of Canada's wartime contributions.
Tip: The center offers a unique Canadian perspective on D-Day and is highly educational.
For a dramatic and impactful experience, visit Pointe du Hoc, a cliff-top promontory between Utah and Omaha Beaches. Here, U.S. Army Rangers scaled sheer cliffs under heavy fire to neutralize German artillery positions. The site remains largely as it was after the battle, pockmarked with shell craters and bunkers.
Tip: This site is a powerful testament to the heroism of the Rangers, but involves walking on uneven terrain and exploring bomb craters.
