Overview
Baile Mor is the principal settlement on the Isle of Iona, a small but profoundly significant island off Scotland's west coast where Saint Columba established his monastery in 563 AD, sparking the spread of Christianity across Scotland and beyond. The restored Iona Abbey, ancient Celtic crosses, and serene landscape of white-sand beaches and turquoise waters make this one of the most spiritually resonant destinations in the British Isles.
Small expedition ships and luxury vessels tender passengers ashore at the village jetty, from which the abbey is a short walk along a single-track road. The island is best visited between May and September when the abbey is fully operational and wildflowers carpet the machair grasslands. There are no vehicles for hire on Iona, and exploration is entirely on foot across gentle but sometimes uneven terrain.

This beautifully restored medieval monastery, built on the site of Saint Columba's original sixth-century foundation, houses intricate carved stonework, an atmospheric cloister, and a collection of early Christian high crosses.
