Overview
Located off the banks of the Rhône River in the southern part of France, sits the costal city of Arles. Known for its rich history, artistic influence and Roman heritage, this is a must-see stop for art lovers and history lovers.
Arles, once an important Roman city, is home to well-preserved ruins including a necropolis and even an Amphitheater still in use today.
Discover the beauty that attracted Vincent Van Gogh and inspired him to create his most masterful works while living along the Rhône River. When you look at Van Gogh’s famed Starry Night painting, you are looking at Arles. In fact, Arles was so inspiring to Van Gogh he produced more than 300 paintings during his time here.

Kick off your day with a visit to the Roman Amphitheatre, one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the city. This impressive structure, dating back to the 1st century AD, once hosted gladiator fights and is still used for events today.
Tip: Climb to the top for a panoramic view of Arles and the surrounding countryside. Imagine the roar of the crowds as you stand where gladiators once fought!

Just a short walk from the amphitheatre, the Roman Theatre is another must-see. Although partially ruined, it still hosts performances and offers a glimpse into the city's ancient past.
Tip: Check if there are any performances scheduled during your visit for a unique experience. Picture yourself in ancient times, enjoying a play under the open sky.

Wander through the narrow, winding streets of Arles' Old Town. The charming squares, historic buildings, and quaint shops make it a delightful area to explore.
Tip: Stop by Place du Forum, a lively square with cafes and restaurants, perfect for a coffee break. Soak in the vibrant atmosphere and watch the world go by.

This beautiful Romanesque church, with its stunning cloister, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The intricate carvings on the portal and the peaceful cloister garden are highlights.
Tip: Spend some time in the cloister garden to enjoy a moment of tranquility. Let the serene surroundings transport you back in time.

Arles is famously associated with Vincent van Gogh, who created many of his masterpieces here. Follow the Van Gogh Trail to see the locations that inspired his paintings, such as the Langlois Bridge and the Yellow House.
Tip: Visit the Fondation Vincent van Gogh, which showcases contemporary art inspired by Van Gogh's work. Feel the creative energy that once inspired the great artist.

The Alyscamps is an ancient Roman necropolis, lined with sarcophagi and shaded by trees. This atmospheric site was also painted by Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes as the paths can be uneven. Let your imagination run wild as you walk through this historic site.

End your day with a meal at one of Arles' many excellent restaurants. Try local specialties such as bull stew (gardiane de taureau) and tapenade.
Tip: Make a reservation in advance, especially if you plan to dine at a popular restaurant. Savor the flavors of Provence and toast to a day well spent!
