Overview
Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam is the fourth in a long line of illustrious ships of the same name. The first ms Nieuw Amsterdam served during WWI, the second is the model for Holland America’s logo and was a favorite amongst Hollywood heavy hitters like Rita Hayworth and Spencer Tracey.
Taking a bit from each of her predecessors, this ship features the latest additions to Holland America’s fleet with Tamarind, a pan-Asian restaurant, the Explorer’s Lounge Bar, which offers wine tastings, and a new luxury jewelry boutique.
This Nieuw Amsterdam also gives a nod to New York, the city she’s named after, with exquisite art displayed throughout the ship.

Pros: Well maintained, excellent size, wonderful suites, very stable in the water, plenty of dining and other venues so that you never felt crowded

The team at Holland America onshore and aboard ship make you feel so very welcomed. Every person we encountered from the transportation from the airport to our first hotel to the Denali lodge and ship made this trip the experience of a lifetime. We were traveling with our extended family of 19 adults and we could not have had a more wonderful trip! Even though there was a little snafu with our dining room tables on the first day the staff worked it out and were so helpful and apologetic. I can’t say enough complimentary things about the staff except to say thank you! This was our 4th cruise but first with Holland America and it was absolutely perfect!
Pros: Holland America takes care of it all! From the transportation from airport to accommodations and shore excursions they handle it all!!

This was our first time on Holland America, but not our first time cruising. Of all the ships we've been on, the food was the BEST on this ship, the Niew Amsterdam. Every meal was so delicious! The rooms are kept very clean. Very nice fitness center. The entertainment was varied and excellent every night. Loved the Orange Party. Terrific service by all the staff! This was an Alaskan cruise tour (7 days on the cruise plus 3 days on land) and Holland America has a very organized system for transferring luggage from the ship to the land portion of our trip to each hotel and ultimately the airport. My husband and I highly recommend cruising with Holland America.
Pros: Delicious food, great entertainment, fun Orange Night, great service from room stewards and servers in the dining room and buffet

JC was fabulous with keeping us actively engaged with her planned activities. I peeked in the Oragami class. Impressive setup. Evening shows and dining staff were wonderful. One occurrence.. On the pool deck and seated near the refreshment cart, clean glasses stacked, 2 pitchers lemonade and water. An attendant was replacing glasses. Not knowing if self service or not, I walked over to the and asked for a glass of water. He immediately frowned, scowled at me and rushed away. I was embarrassed and surprised. He was medium height, Asian features, wore black rimmed eyeglasses, wearing no name tag. My friend went up to that cart and poured a glass of water for me. I saw that man on another occasion attending to the refreshment cart.carts.
Pros: Room attendant, all employees except one, I found to be courteous, patient and extremely helpful everywhere I went on the ship. I love the hand-wash station in Lido Market Place. I love how the food is served to customers and not having self service.
Cons: Too many hand sanitizer stations were empty throughout the ship. More sanitizer wipes stations in the fitness center to clean equipment

Pros: Exceeded expectations.
Cons: Holland America app does not work very well. Info not consistent and comes and goes.

The hydro pool was 150 before the voyage and I tried to sign up for it and it wouldn't let me. I signed up for it the first day and was charged 150 and another charge of 50. They gave me a little jar of body scrub . We had unlimited use of the pool and the heated lounges. We had no problem with the pool, but people were reading books and on their computers or on their cell phones. I think they needed to put a time limit the lounges. We made dining reservations ahead of time for the Tamarind restaurant. I made the reservation through guest services. It was a party of 8. The operator told me she could link our names for 6 and the other 2 would be a half hour earlier. We needed to talk to the manager. They're only open in the evening. No one was there when we tried to talk to them. The manager did a great job and gave us 2 tables side by side.
Pros: great food, pleasant employees
Cons: spa hydro package, reservations for dining rooms
