Not all Holland America ships are the same, and that's actually one of the line's greatest strengths.
With 11 ships across four distinct classes, Holland America offers more variety than most travelers realize. The ship you sail shapes everything: dining options, atmosphere, entertainment, and how much space you have to spread out.
Ship sizes range from 1,432 guests on the intimate R Class to 2,668 on the Pinnacle Class, and the difference in experience is real. Here's a breakdown of every class, what sets each one apart, and how to find the right fit for the way you travel.

One thing every class has in common: pickleball. Holland America is the official cruise line partner of the Professional Pickleball Association, and every ship in the fleet has an ocean-view pickleball court, making it a great option for one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.
Pinnacle Class: Holland America's Flagship Experience

Ships: Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Koningsdam
The three Pinnacle Class ships are Holland America's most fully featured vessels, each carrying just over 2,600 guests. If you want the widest range of dining, entertainment, and suite options the fleet has to offer, this is where you'll find it.
Dining
Pinnacle Class ships have the most specialty dining venues in the fleet, including exclusive options you won't find on any other Holland America ship:
- Pinnacle Grill: the line's signature steakhouse
- Canaletto: Italian dining
- Tamarind: Pan-Asian cuisine
- Rudi's Sel de Mer: an upscale French seafood restaurant exclusive to Pinnacle Class
- Morimoto by Sea: Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto's restaurant, with a full dedicated venue on Koningsdam and a Sushi Bar on all three ships
- Koningstafel: an elevated Chef's Table dining experience exclusive to Koningsdam
- Club Orange Dining Room: a private dining venue exclusively for Neptune Suite, Pinnacle Suite, and Club Orange guests
- Grand Dutch Café and Gelato & Juice Bar round out the casual options.
Entertainment

Pinnacle Class is the only class in the fleet with B.B. King's Blues Club, a Memphis-style live rhythm-and-blues venue that has become one of Holland America's most beloved onboard experiences. All three ships also feature the Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard Onboard.
Suites
The Pinnacle Class suite ladder is the most extensive in the fleet, running from Verandah staterooms up through Vista Suites, Signature Suites, Neptune Suites, and the 1,290 sq. ft. Pinnacle Suite with a private whirlpool verandah, personal concierge, and complimentary laundry service.
Fleet Fact: Holland America has never sailed without a ship named Rotterdam in its fleet. A tradition stretching back to the line's very first ocean liner in 1872, the current Rotterdam, delivered in 2021, is the seventh ship to carry the name.
Signature Class: Design-Forward and Perfectly Proportioned

Ships: Nieuw Amsterdam, Eurodam
The two Signature Class ships sit comfortably in the middle of the Holland America fleet, carrying just over 2,100 guests each. They offer a full, well-rounded onboard experience with a mid-size feel that many travelers find to be the sweet spot: enough dining and entertainment options to keep things interesting, without the scale of a larger ship.
Both ships have their own distinct design personalities. Nieuw Amsterdam pays tribute to New York City with an Art Deco-inspired aesthetic and an extensive art collection woven throughout the ship. Eurodam brings a warm, refined elegance that feels immediately welcoming.
Dining
Signature Class ships offer a strong specialty dining lineup, including Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, and Tamarind. In place of a full Morimoto by Sea restaurant, both ships feature the Morimoto by Sea Pop-Up Experience on select evenings.
Entertainment
Both ships feature the Rolling Stone Lounge, Billboard Onboard, and The Dam Band, delivering the same live music energy that Holland America is known for fleet-wide.
Suites
Suite categories run from Verandah staterooms through Neptune Suites and the Pinnacle Suite.
Vista Class: Classic Holland America Elegance

Ships: Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam
The four Vista Class ships are the heart of the Holland America fleet. Carrying just under 2,000 guests each, they deliver the classic Holland America experience in a mid-size package that works beautifully across a wide range of itineraries. Their signature three-story atrium with central sculptures gives each ship an immediately recognizable sense of timeless elegance.
Their size is also a practical advantage. Zuiderdam, for example, is nimble enough to weave through straits and channels that larger ships can't access, opening up itinerary options that bigger vessels miss.
Dining
Vista Class ships offer Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, and the Morimoto by Sea Pop-Up Experience on select evenings. Tamarind is available on select Asia and Grand World Voyage itineraries on some Vista Class ships.
Entertainment
All four ships feature the Rolling Stone Lounge, Billboard Onboard, and The Dam Band for live music every evening.
Suites
Suite categories run from Verandah staterooms through Signature Suites and Neptune Suites to the 1,290 sq. ft. Pinnacle Suite, which offers concierge service, priority check-in, and complimentary laundry.
R Class: Intimate, Traditional, and Built for the Long Voyage

The two R Class ships are the smallest and most intimate in the fleet, each carrying 1,432 guests (about 35% fewer than a Pinnacle Class ship). The difference shows up on board in all the right ways: shorter lines, a quieter atmosphere, and a crew that gets to know you by name.
Their size also makes them natural favorites for Grand Voyages, Legendary Voyages, and longer sailings to smaller, more remote ports. If that kind of itinerary appeals to you, our guide to Holland America's Legendary Voyages is worth a read.
Both ships have their own personality, too. Volendam draws inspiration from lush botanical gardens, while Zaandam takes a livelier turn with musical décor that includes guitars signed by Eric Clapton, Iggy Pop, and the Rolling Stones.
Dining
R Class ships offer Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto. The dining experience is more streamlined than the larger classes, which suits the traditional cruising atmosphere these ships are known for.
Entertainment
Rather than the Rolling Stone Lounge or B.B. King's Blues Club, R Class ships feature a classic Piano Bar and the Wajang Theater for stage shows and afternoon movies.
Suites
Suite categories go from Ocean View and Verandah staterooms through Vista Suites, Neptune Suites, and the 1,290 sq. ft. Pinnacle Suite. Volendam also offers Lanai staterooms, a category unique to that ship in the fleet.
