Overview
Zion National Park, located in southwestern Utah, is a breathtaking inland destination of monumental cliffs and dramatic canyons. It is not a cruise port, but a natural wonder that draws visitors from all over the world to its majestic sandstone walls and diverse ecosystems. The park is characterized by its towering red, orange, and white cliffs, a vibrant green river, and an enchanting mix of desert and forest landscapes.
A visit to Zion is an immersion in the raw power and beauty of nature. The park's main canyon is easily accessible by a free shuttle system, which allows visitors to explore its iconic features without a car. Whether you are a seasoned hiker tackling the famous Angels Landing or a family enjoying a leisurely stroll along the riverside, Zion offers an unforgettable and awe-inspiring experience.
For a truly unique experience, hike The Narrows, a world-famous slot canyon where the Virgin River flows between towering walls. This hike involves wading, walking, and sometimes swimming in the river, with each bend revealing stunning new vistas.
Tip: You will be hiking in the river. Wear proper footwear, like canyoneering shoes, and check the weather and flash flood warnings before you go. You can rent gear from outfitters in the nearby town of Springdale.
The Riverside Walk is a paved, accessible trail that follows the Virgin River up to the mouth of The Narrows. This easy, flat walk is perfect for all ages and offers a beautiful, peaceful introduction to the canyon's scenery.
Tip: This trail is especially enjoyable in the morning or late afternoon when the light is perfect for photography and the crowds are smaller.
Hike the Emerald Pools Trail to discover a series of beautiful pools and waterfalls. The trail offers three levels of difficulty (Lower, Middle, and Upper), each providing a different perspective of the lush greenery and cascading water.
Tip: The Lower Emerald Pools trail is the easiest and most popular, but if you have the time and energy, the Upper Emerald Pools offer a more challenging hike and a different view.
During most of the year, personal vehicles are not allowed on the main canyon road. Take the free Zion Canyon Scenic Drive shuttle to access the park's main trails and viewpoints. The shuttle is narrated and is a great way to see the canyon without the stress of driving and parking.
Tip: The shuttle runs frequently. Board it at the Visitor Center to begin your tour of the park.
For a great payoff with a moderate effort, hike the Canyon Overlook Trail. This short but spectacular trail on the east side of the park provides one of the most iconic and jaw-dropping views of Zion Canyon and the winding Zion-Mount Carmel Highway.
Tip: This trail is located outside the main shuttle route. You will need a car to access it, and parking can be challenging.
The Pa'rus Trail is an accessible, paved trail that connects the Visitor Center to Canyon Junction. This trail is a great option for a leisurely walk, or you can rent a bike and cycle along the river. It offers beautiful views of the Virgin River and the surrounding cliffs.
Tip: This is the only trail in the main canyon where pets are allowed, but they must be on a leash.
