Tip: While you may not have time for a full bath, many ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) offer day-use packages. Even if you don't use the baths, the seaside atmosphere is very relaxing.
For a fantastic panoramic view of the city and the Sea of Japan, hike to the top of the Yonago Castle Ruins. While only the stone walls and foundation remain, the elevated location provides a great vantage point to see the city's layout and the surrounding natural beauty, including the towering silhouette of Mt. Daisen.
Tip: The walk up is a bit steep but relatively short. It's a great spot for photography, especially at sunset.
Many excursions from Sakaiminato include a trip to the nearby city of Matsue, the capital of Shimane Prefecture. Here, you can visit the magnificent Matsue Castle, one of the few remaining original castles in Japan. You can also take a relaxing boat ride around the castle's moat.
Tip: Matsue is a great place to experience traditional Japanese culture. Don't miss the tranquil beauty of the Yuushien Garden, famous for its peony flowers.
Since your ship is docked in Sakaiminato, take time to walk along the whimsical Mizuki Shigeru Road. This street is dedicated to the famous manga artist from the area and is lined with over 170 bronze statues of the "yokai" (supernatural monsters) from his works.
Tip: This is a fun and quirky attraction for all ages. Look for the themed trains and buses that also feature the manga characters.
The San'in region is famous for its fresh seafood, particularly crabs. Take the opportunity to try the local delicacies at a restaurant near the port or in Yonago. The Sakaiminato Fish Center is an excellent place to see the variety of fresh catches and sample local treats.
Tip: Ask for the local specialties of the day, as the menu is often based on what the fishermen caught that morning.
For art and garden lovers, a trip to the Adachi Museum of Art is a must. The museum is famous for its stunning Japanese gardens, which have been consistently ranked among the most beautiful in Japan. The gardens are designed to be a living work of art, viewed from the museum's large windows.
