Overview
Waterton Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a stunning inland destination located in the southwestern corner of Alberta, Canada. It is a place of breathtaking beauty where the majestic Rocky Mountains rise abruptly from the rolling prairies, creating a unique and dramatic landscape. As an inland park, it is not a cruise port but a key destination for those exploring the Canadian Rockies by land.
The park is the Canadian half of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the world's first such park, established in 1932. A visit here is an immersive experience in nature, offering opportunities for incredible hiking, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives. Despite its small size, Waterton is packed with stunning scenery, from vibrant red rock canyons to deep glacial lakes and cascading waterfalls, promising a memorable escape into the heart of the "Crown of the Continent."
The most iconic way to experience the park is by taking the Waterton Shoreline Cruise. Aboard the historic M.V. International, you'll travel the length of Upper Waterton Lake, surrounded by towering cliffs and majestic peaks, and even cross the international border into the U.S. side of the park (Glacier National Park).
Tip: The cruise provides an excellent opportunity to spot wildlife like bears and goats along the shoreline and offers unparalleled views of the landscape.
Take a scenic drive along the Red Rock Parkway, a winding road that travels through the Blakiston Valley to the vibrant Red Rock Canyon. The canyon is a unique geological formation with layers of red and green argillite rock, carved by the force of the creek.
Tip: The parkway is a prime area for wildlife viewing, so drive slowly and keep an eye out for bears, elk, and deer.
For one of the most rewarding and accessible hikes in the park, take the short but steep climb up Bear's Hump. This trail offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Waterton townsite, Upper Waterton Lake, and the surrounding mountains.
Tip: The trail is a popular choice for sunset, when the light on the Prince of Wales Hotel and the lake is truly magical.
Perched on a bluff overlooking the lake, the historic Prince of Wales Hotel is an iconic landmark of the park. Built in 1927 by the Great Northern Railway, its grand Swiss chalet-style architecture is a sight to behold. Enjoy afternoon tea in its elegant dining room for a classic experience.
Tip: Even if you're not staying there, the hotel is worth a visit for its stunning views and historical significance.
Right in the Waterton townsite, you can find the beautiful Cameron Falls. This picturesque waterfall cascades over ancient, 1.5-billion-year-old rock, and its waters are famous for turning a beautiful pink color after a heavy rainfall.
Tip: The falls are easily accessible from the town and are a perfect photo stop for all visitors.
Waterton Lakes offer opportunities for various water activities. You can rent a canoe or kayak and paddle on the calm waters of Cameron Lake or Upper Waterton Lake. It's a peaceful way to immerse yourself in the mountain scenery.
Tip: The lakes are glacier-fed and very cold, so swimming is only for the brave!
