Hike up or take the funicular to Gediminas' Tower, a remnant of the Upper Castle. The tower is a national symbol of Lithuania and offers unparalleled panoramic views of the entire Old Town, the Neris River, and the modern city skyline.
Tip: The walk up the hill is a bit steep but relatively short. The view from the top is well worth the effort and provides a great orientation to the city's layout.
Discover the magnificent Vilnius Cathedral in the main Cathedral Square. This neoclassical masterpiece is a symbol of Lithuania's independence and faith. Inside, you can see its stunning chapels and Crypts. The detached bell tower is also a point of interest and a major city landmark.
Tip: Don't miss the crypts of the cathedral, which contain the remains of dukes, bishops, and other historical figures.
Walk along the charming Literatų Street, an artistic and quirky lane dedicated to Lithuanian writers. The street is currently adorned with hundreds of small art pieces, ceramics, glass, and metal objects, each dedicated to a different Lithuanian author or poet.
Tip: This is a great photo opportunity and a unique way to get a glimpse into Lithuania's literary heritage.
Cross a small bridge to enter Užupis, a bohemian and artistic neighborhood that playfully declared itself a "republic" on April 1, 1997. The area is filled with art galleries, creative workshops, cafes, and its own constitution displayed on a wall in multiple languages.
Tip: Read the constitution, which includes quirky laws like "Everyone has the right to be unhappy," for a good laugh. The atmosphere is very laid-back and creative.
Visit the Gates of Dawn, a prominent city gate that is home to a revered chapel containing an icon of the Virgin Mary. The icon is believed to have miraculous powers and is a major pilgrimage site. The chapel is a peaceful and sacred space for reflection.
Tip: Be respectful of pilgrims when you visit. The serene atmosphere is one of the most powerful parts of the experience.
