Overview
Vík í Mýrdal, or simply Vík, is a small, picturesque village on the southern coast of Iceland. It is the southernmost settlement on the mainland and serves as a key stop for excursions exploring the island's magnificent South Coast. While not a cruise port itself, Vík is a gateway to some of Iceland's most dramatic and iconic landscapes, making it a must-see destination for cruise passengers.
The village is best known for its breathtaking surroundings, including the famous Reynisfjara black sand beach with its basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the Atlantic Ocean. The area is a hub for adventure and exploration, offering a unique blend of volcanic terrain, glacial ice caps, and roaring ocean waves. A visit to Vík is an opportunity to witness the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland's nature and learn about the powerful geological forces that have shaped the land.
Visit the world-famous Reynisfjara black sand beach, known for its otherworldly black volcanic sand, towering basalt columns, and powerful Atlantic waves. Marvel at the dramatic Reynisdrangar sea stacks just offshore and explore the unique cave at the base of the cliffs.
Tip: The waves at Reynisfjara are powerful and unpredictable. Always stay a safe distance from the water's edge and never turn your back on the ocean. Fatal accidents have occurred.
For the adventurous, take a hike (about 45-60 minutes each way) or join an ATV/buggy tour to the iconic Sólheimasandur plane wreck. This abandoned DC-3 aircraft on a desolate black sand plain offers a surreal and popular photo opportunity.
Tip: The walk to the plane wreck is long and can be very cold and windy. Dress in warm, windproof layers and bring water.
Take a moment to admire the charming Vík í Mýrdal Church (Víkurkirkja), perched on a hilltop overlooking the village. The white church with its red roof is a perfect photo subject and offers a fantastic vantage point to see the whole village and the surrounding black beaches.
Tip: The church is not only a beautiful landmark but also an important gathering point for villagers in case of a volcanic eruption from the nearby Katla volcano.
Despite its small size, Vík has a few notable shops and eateries. Browse for traditional Icelandic wool sweaters, lava rock jewelry, and other souvenirs. Stop for a bite to eat or a hot drink in one of the cozy cafes.
Tip: Try the local fish and chips or a hearty lamb stew for a taste of authentic Icelandic comfort food.
Located a short drive from Vík, Dyrhólaey is a stunning 120-meter-high promontory with a massive arch carved by the sea. During the nesting season (typically late May to early August), you can spot thousands of puffins on the cliffs, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
Tip: Access to the higher parts of Dyrhólaey may be restricted during puffin nesting season to protect the birds. Always follow posted signs and guidelines.
The Vík area is a gateway to incredible glacial adventures. Many tours depart from nearby for glacier hikes on Sólheimajökull or to explore the natural ice caves under the Katla volcano. These guided tours offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience on the ancient ice.
Tip: Glacier and ice cave tours require special equipment (provided by the tour operator) and a guide. Do not attempt to explore these areas on your own.
