Veere is a picturesque Dutch town steeped in maritime history.

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Veere, a charming and historically rich town located on Walcheren Island in the province of Zeeland, Netherlands, is a delightful stop for river cruises navigating the intricate waterways of the Dutch Delta. Once a bustling seaport with strong trading links, particularly with Scotland, Veere has retained much of its medieval character, offering visitors a step back in time amidst picturesque canals, impressive architecture, and a tranquil atmosphere.
Today, Veere's economy relies heavily on tourism and its picturesque location on the Veerse Meer (Lake Veere), a large lake created after the closing off of the estuary. The town beautifully preserves its past, inviting exploration of its iconic Great Church, the historic Scottish Houses, and its charming town hall. A cruise stop in Veere promises a peaceful and engaging experience, blending fascinating history with the serene beauty of the Dutch countryside and its beloved waterways.
Dominating Veere's skyline, the Grote Kerk (Great Church) is a massive Gothic structure dating back to the 15th century. Though it has served various purposes over the centuries (including a military hospital), it's now a cultural center. You can climb its tower for panoramic views of Veere, the Veerse Meer, and the surrounding Zeeland landscape.
Tip: Even if you don't climb the tower, walk around the church grounds to appreciate its scale and discover the historic Cisterne (water well) nearby.
Discover the unique history of Veere's Scottish trade links by visiting the Scottish Houses (De Schotse Huizen). These two enchanting 16th-century buildings, once offices and warehouses for Scottish wool merchants, now form part of Museum Veere, showcasing the town's rich maritime past and local heritage.
Tip: Admire the highly ornate facades of Het Lammetje (The Little Lamb) and De Struys (The Ostrich) before stepping inside to explore the collection of local costumes, porcelain, and furniture.
Take a leisurely stroll along Veere's historic harbor and marina. Admire the array of yachts and traditional boats, surrounded by beautiful historic buildings with characteristic facades. The charming promenade is dotted with inviting terraces where you can relax and watch the activity.
Tip: Cross the bridge to the other side of the harbor for a fantastic overview of the town, with the iconic Town Hall tower in the background.
Marvel at Veere's Gothic Town Hall (Stadhuis), an extraordinary building dating back to the late 15th century. Its fairy-tale facade, adorned with statues of former lords and ladies, and its distinctive Renaissance tower with a carillon, make it one of the Netherlands' most impressive town halls. It also houses part of Museum Veere.
Tip: Take note of the intricate details on the facade and try to catch the carillon playing if you can.
Take a refreshing walk on the old city walls (ramparts) that once fortified Veere. This scenic circular path offers beautiful views of the town, the Veerse Meer lake, and the surrounding green landscape. Along the way, you'll find information boards detailing Veere's history.
Tip: This walk provides both historical insight and a lovely opportunity for exercise and fresh air.
Don't leave Veere without sampling some local Zeeland delicacies. Look for fresh seafood (especially mussels and oysters if in season), and be sure to try a Zeeuwse Bolus, a sticky, spiral-shaped sweet pastry often likened to a cinnamon bun, which is a regional specialty.
Tip: Visit one of the local bakeries or cafes for the freshest Zeeuwse Bolus. Oma's Snoepwinkel (Grandma's Candy Shop) is also famous for old Dutch candies.
