Stroll through Tomar's delightful historic center, with its grid of cobbled streets centered around the charming Praça da República. Admire the traditional architecture, visit the 15th-century Church of São João Baptista, and soak in the relaxed local atmosphere.
Tip: Look for local pastry shops to try "Fatias de Tomar" (egg yolk and sugar sweets) or "Queijadas de Tomar" (cheese tarts), regional delicacies.
Visit the Tomar Synagogue (Sinagoga de Tomar), one of the best-preserved medieval synagogues in Portugal, dating back to 1438. Now home to the Abraham Zacuto Luso-Hebrew Museum, it offers a poignant insight into Portugal's Jewish heritage.
Tip: The synagogue is small but historically significant. Its four interior columns are said to represent the four matriarchs of Israel.
Adjacent to the Convent of Christ, the Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes is a beautiful urban forest park, once the Convent's olive grove. Enjoy peaceful walking trails, shaded glades, and even a mysterious circular temple (Charolinha) hidden among the trees, offering splendid views back towards the castle.
Tip: This park provides a lovely natural retreat and a pleasant walk, especially on a warm day, after exploring the Convent.
Descend to the banks of the Nabão River and visit Mouchão Park, a serene riverside oasis. Here, you'll find the iconic Mouchão Wheel, a traditional wooden waterwheel that evokes the city's past as a center for mills and agriculture.
Tip: The park is ideal for a leisurely stroll and offers picturesque views of the river and the town.
Take a short trip outside the city center to see the impressive Aqueduct of Pegões (Aqueduto dos Pegões). Built in the late 16th century, this grand aqueduct, with its 180 arches, once supplied water to the Convent of Christ and is a remarkable feat of historical engineering.
Tip: You can walk along the top of the aqueduct for a unique perspective and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside (exercise caution, as there are no handrails in parts). Access typically requires a short taxi ride.
