Overview
Tobermorey Station is not a town or a cruise port, but a vast, family-owned working cattle station located in the remote southeast of the Northern Territory, Australia, very close to the Queensland border. It's a significant stop along the Plenty Highway, which forms part of the "Outback Way" – an epic, mostly unsealed route connecting Queensland to Western Australia through the heart of the continent. Far from any coastline, Tobermorey truly represents the Australian outback.
This expansive pastoral lease, covering approximately 6,000 square kilometers (1.8 million acres), offers a unique insight into the scale of Australia's agricultural industry and the rugged beauty of its central desert landscapes. While primarily a working station, it also operates a popular Roadhouse & Caravan Park, providing essential services, accommodation, and a taste of remote station life for travelers venturing through this isolated but fascinating part of Australia.
Gain a firsthand appreciation for the scale of Australia's cattle industry. While you won't be actively working, you'll be on a vast, active cattle station. Observe the daily operations, the landscape, and perhaps see some of the cattle or station equipment.
Tip: To truly appreciate the remote station life, consider staying overnight in their accommodation or caravan park.
This is the primary visitor facility. Enjoy a stop at the Roadhouse for fuel, basic supplies, and a refreshment. If you're traveling by caravan or camper, the Caravan Park offers grassy, shaded sites with amenities, providing a welcome oasis in the remote landscape.
Tip: Take advantage of the modern amenities, including hot showers and laundry facilities, which are highly valued in such remote areas.
Visit "The Meathouse" Bar, a unique, licensed bar at the station. This character-filled space, often featuring an iconic "Camp Truck Firepit," provides a great spot to relax, share stories with fellow travelers, and enjoy a cold drink after a long day of driving the Outback Way.
Tip: It's a fantastic spot to watch the famous Outback sunsets, as the light paints the landscape in incredible colors.
Tobermorey offers a range of bush walking trails around the station grounds. These trails vary in length and offer opportunities for birdwatching, gentle exercise, and experiencing the unique desert flora and fauna up close.
Tip: Even a short walk can give you a sense of the vastness and quiet beauty of the Outback. Be sure to carry water and wear appropriate footwear.
Tobermorey is a key stop on the "Outback Way," often dubbed "Australia's Longest Shortcut." This is a journey in itself, connecting remote parts of Australia. Experience the vast open spaces, the changing landscapes from red desert to spinifex plains, and the unique challenges and rewards of Outback travel.
Tip: If you're driving this route, always check road conditions (which can change rapidly due to rain) and ensure your vehicle is properly equipped for remote travel.
Far from city lights, the Outback offers some of the most spectacular night skies on Earth. Spend an evening stargazing and marvel at the clarity of the Milky Way and the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere.
Tip: Download a stargazing app beforehand to help identify constellations and planets. The lack of light pollution provides an incredible astronomical show.
