Overview
The Island of Hawaiʻi, affectionately known as the "Big Island" for its sheer size, is the youngest and largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It offers a stunning diversity of landscapes, from active volcanoes and black sand beaches to lush rainforests and snow-capped peaks. The island is typically visited via two distinct cruise ports: Hilo on the eastern side and Kailua-Kona on the western side.
Hilo, located on the windward coast, is the gateway to the island's most dramatic natural wonders. It's a land of cascading waterfalls, tropical gardens, and the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Kailua-Kona, on the leeward coast, offers a different vibe with its historical fishing village, calm waters, and world-famous coffee plantations. While both ports are on the same island, they provide uniquely different experiences, allowing visitors to explore the fiery heart and the tranquil soul of Hawaiʻi.
The undisputed highlight of a Hilo visit is an excursion to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to two of the world's most active volcanoes: Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. Explore dramatic volcanic landscapes, walk through a a massive lava tube (Thurston Lava Tube), and witness steam vents rising from the earth's surface.
Tip: Volcanic activity is always changing. Check with your cruise line or a local tour operator for the latest park conditions and viewing opportunities.
Just a short drive from the port is Rainbow Falls, an 80-foot waterfall on the Wailuku River. The falls are named for the rainbows that often appear in the mist on sunny mornings, created by the light refracting through the spray.
Tip: Visit in the early morning for the best chance of seeing the rainbow in the mist. The viewing area is easily accessible and a short walk from the parking lot.
Take a peaceful stroll through the beautiful Liliʻuokalani Gardens, a 30-acre authentic Japanese garden located on the shores of Hilo Bay. The park features serene pagodas, rock gardens, fishponds, and arching bridges, dedicated to the memory of the Japanese immigrants who worked in the area's sugar plantations.
Tip: This park is a great place for a tranquil break and offers stunning views of the bay and Mauna Kea in the distance on a clear day.
Experience one of the Big Island's unique geological features by visiting a black sand beach like Punaluʻu or Richardson Beach Park. The black sand is formed from cooled lava that has been broken down by the ocean's waves. These beaches are also famous for being resting spots for endangered Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu).
Tip: Always observe sea turtles from a respectful distance (at least 10 feet) and never touch them, as they are a protected species.
Explore the charming, old-fashioned downtown Hilo, which is filled with historic wooden buildings, art galleries, and small shops. Don't miss the bustling Hilo Farmers Market, where you can find an incredible variety of tropical fruits, local produce, flowers, and handcrafted goods.
Tip: The main Farmers Market is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, but there is a smaller market every other day of the week.
Indulge your sweet tooth by visiting a local factory that produces one of the Big Island's signature products. Tours of macadamia nut or chocolate factories offer a fun and delicious way to learn about the island's agricultural heritage and, of course, sample some tasty treats.
Tip: Many of these tours are self-guided and include free samples, making for a perfect casual stop during your day.
