Take an excursion to Gaustatoppen, a mountain that offers one of the widest views in all of Norway. On a clear day, you can see up to one-sixth of the country from its summit. For those who don't want to hike, the unique Gaustabanen funicular railway travels right inside the mountain to the top.
Tip: Weather conditions on the mountain can change quickly. Even in summer, bring warm, windproof layers. Check the Gaustabanen's schedule in advance.
While the main attractions are inland, the Telemark region extends to the coast. Charming seaside towns like Kragerø or Langesund offer a taste of coastal life with their white wooden houses, bustling harbors, and scenic archipelago. These towns are often a starting point for exploring the rest of the county.
Tip: The coastal area is a popular summer destination for Norwegians. Enjoy a meal at a waterside restaurant or take a local ferry for island hopping.
Visit the town of Skien, the regional capital and the birthplace of the world-renowned playwright Henrik Ibsen. You can explore his childhood home and other sites that inspired his work, offering a literary and cultural layer to your excursion.
