Tambopata, located in the Madre de Dios region of Peru, is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. One of the most spectacular events in Tambopata is the sight of hundreds of macaws and parrots congregating at a clay lick at dawn. These birds descend to the mineral-rich clay walls to ingest the vital nutrients. This colorful and noisy spectacle, such as at the famous Chuncho or Colorado clay licks, is a highlight for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
Tip: The best time to visit a clay lick is on a clear morning, so be prepared for an early start.
Take a canoe or small boat onto one of Tambopata's peaceful oxbow lakes, such as Lake Sandoval or Lake Condenado. These serene bodies of water, formed by meandering rivers, are a haven for wildlife. You can often spot families of endangered giant river otters, black caimans, various species of monkeys, and an array of unique birds.
Tip: Paddling in a non-motorized canoe allows for a quiet and intimate wildlife viewing experience.
See the Amazon from a different perspective by walking on a canopy walkway or climbing a canopy tower. These elevated platforms provide incredible views of the rainforest from above, offering a chance to see canopy-dwelling birds and monkeys that are difficult to spot from the forest floor.
Tip: Many eco-lodges have their own canopy walkways or towers, which are often included in the lodge stay.
Experience the rainforest after dark on a guided night walk. The jungle comes alive at night with a new set of creatures, from frogs and snakes to nocturnal mammals and a variety of insects. Your guide will use flashlights to point out the fascinating, often bizarre, nocturnal species you might otherwise miss.
Tip: Wear closed-toed shoes and use insect repellent for comfort and safety.
On a guided jungle trek, learn about the incredible array of plants and their traditional uses. Local guides and naturalists are experts in ethnobotany, sharing their knowledge of medicinal plants and the intricate relationship between the local communities and the forest.
