Overview
Sukhothai, whose name means "Dawn of Happiness," is a monumental inland destination and a UNESCO World Heritage site that was once the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries. Located in north-central Thailand, its sprawling historical park contains the remains of nearly 200 temples, palaces, and Buddha statues, all illustrating the beginnings of Thai art and architecture. A visit here is a profound journey into the origins of Thai civilization and a captivating glimpse into a golden era of history.
The historical park, with its serene lotus ponds and ancient trees, is a living museum that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Beyond the main park, the area is also home to other significant ruins, bustling local markets, and a quiet, charming modern town. Sukhothai offers an immersive cultural experience for anyone seeking to understand the deep historical roots of Thailand, far from the coastal tourist hubs.
The best way to explore the vast and beautiful Sukhothai Historical Park is by renting a bicycle. This allows you to leisurely cycle between the main temples and ruins, such as Wat Mahathat and Wat Si Sawai, at your own pace while enjoying the serene landscape of lotus ponds and greenery.
Tip: Start your exploration early in the morning to beat the midday heat and the crowds, and for the best light for photography.
As the most important and impressive temple in the historical park, Wat Mahathat is a must-see. The ruins showcase a large main chedi (reliquary tower) surrounded by smaller towers and an impressive series of seated and standing Buddha images.
Tip: The temple is particularly beautiful at sunset when the light softens and the ruins are illuminated.
Take a short hike to Wat Saphan Hin, located on a small hill outside the main park. The rewarding view at the top includes the ruins of a small temple and a stunning, colossal 12-meter-tall standing Buddha, overlooking the surrounding area.
Tip: The stone causeway ("Saphan Hin") leading up to the temple can be slippery. Wear good walking shoes for this part of the journey.
Visit Wat Si Chum, located just outside the central park area. This temple houses an immense and awe-inspiring seated Buddha image, Phra Ajana, which stands at an impressive 15 meters tall. The Buddha is nestled in a small, roofless mondop (a cubical building), with only a narrow slit providing a view of the statue.
Tip: Look for the etched slate inscriptions on the ceiling of the walkway, which tell the story of the Buddha’s life.
If your visit extends into the evening, explore the Sukhothai Night Market in the new town. This bustling market is where you can find delicious and authentic local street food, fresh produce, and a variety of crafts and souvenirs, offering a true taste of local Thai life.
Tip: Try local specialties like Sukhothai noodles (kuai tiao Sukhothai), a delicious rice noodle soup.
If you have more time, consider a trip to the nearby Si Satchanalai Historical Park, a sister city to Sukhothai and also a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is often less crowded and offers a more tranquil, atmospheric exploration of ancient ruins.
Tip: Si Satchanalai is about an hour's drive from Sukhothai, so it may require a dedicated half-day or full-day excursion.
