Overview
Stalheim is a small village perched high on a ridge at the top of the Nærøydalen valley in Vestland county, Norway. It is not a coastal port but a destination famous for one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in all of Norway. For nearly 200 years, visitors have been drawn to the vantage point from the historic Stalheim Hotel, which overlooks a deep valley carved by glaciers, surrounded by towering mountains and framed by two spectacular waterfalls, Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen.
As a popular shore excursion, a visit to Stalheim offers a profound sense of the scale and wild beauty of the Norwegian fjords. It provides a perfect opportunity to witness the dramatic landscapes that have inspired artists for centuries, particularly the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Nærøydalen valley. The journey to Stalheim itself is an adventure, often involving a scenic drive through tunnels or a steep, winding road that adds to the sense of arriving at a truly magnificent destination.
The main attraction of Stalheim is the unparalleled view from the Stalheim Hotel terrace, which overlooks the entire Nærøydalen valley. The vista encompasses two cascading waterfalls (Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen) and the narrow, steep-sided valley below, offering a postcard-perfect photo opportunity.
Tip: Even on a misty or cloudy day, the view can be moody and mystical, so be prepared for any weather.
While the old Stalheimskleiva road with its 13 hairpin bends is now closed to cars and buses, some parts have been opened as a walking path. This old road is one of the steepest in Northern Europe and a truly historic piece of engineering, with views of the valley and the waterfalls.
Tip: Check with your tour operator about the possibility of walking this road. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for a steep but rewarding descent.
Near the hotel, the Stalheim Folk Museum is a unique, privately-owned open-air museum. It features a collection of traditional buildings from the surrounding area, showcasing what life was like in rural Norway in centuries past.
Tip: The museum offers a quick and easy way to learn about the cultural history of the region.
While the view from the top is famous, seeing the two waterfalls, Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen, from the valley floor offers a different and equally impressive perspective. You can truly appreciate the power and height of these gushing falls up close.
Tip: Your tour itinerary will likely include stops at the bottom of the valley, but be aware that the flow of the waterfalls is most impressive during spring and early summer when the snowmelt is at its peak.
Many excursions to Stalheim are part of a larger tour that includes a scenic cruise on the Nærøyfjord. This fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the narrowest in the world, is an unmissable part of the experience, with towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and serene waters.
Tip: Bundle up for the boat ride, as it can be very cold on the open decks even in summer.
