Take a taxi or arranged tour to Christiansted, the island's former Danish capital, located about a 30-minute drive from Frederiksted. Wander through the Christiansted National Historic Site, featuring well-preserved Danish colonial buildings, the iconic Fort Christiansvaern (a bright yellow stronghold), and a picturesque boardwalk along the harbor.
Tip: Christiansted offers excellent duty-free shopping, particularly for jewelry, alongside quaint cafes and restaurants.
Right at your doorstep from the pier is Frederiksted. Explore the town's historic district with its pastel-colored buildings, some beautifully restored. Visit Fort Frederik, an 18th-century Danish fort that played a role in the 1848 emancipation of enslaved people in the Danish West Indies.
Tip: The pier itself is a popular spot for local divers and snorkelers when no ship is in port, and the nearby Frederiksted Beach is easily accessible.
Learn about St. Croix's rich rum-making heritage with a tour of one of its famous distilleries. The Cruzan Rum Distillery (one of the oldest in the Caribbean) and the Captain Morgan Visitor Center both offer guided tours that explain the distillation process, followed by tastings.
Tip: Tours usually involve samples, so plan accordingly if you're driving or have other activities. Purchase bottles directly from the distillery for duty-free prices.
Head to Cane Bay Beach on the north shore, known for its laid-back atmosphere, beautiful sand, and fantastic snorkeling and diving opportunities, including the famous "Cane Bay Wall," a dramatic underwater drop-off. You'll find beach bars and restaurants here.
Tip: Many local dive shops are located at Cane Bay if you're interested in a guided dive. Horseback riding tours sometimes meet here as well.
Step back in time at the Estate Whim Plantation Museum, one of the few preserved 18th-century sugar plantations in the Virgin Islands. Tour the restored Great House, sugar mill, and slave quarters to gain insight into the island's plantation era and the lives of those who worked there.
Tip: This museum offers a poignant and educational look at St. Croix's agricultural and social history. Transportation from Frederiksted is required.
