Tip: Take your time and plan for at least an hour to drive the byway, plus time for stops at waterfalls and trailheads.
A short side trip from the main byway leads to Roughlock Falls, a serene and beautiful cascade. A well-maintained trail and boardwalk system make for an easy and scenic walk to the falls. The area is also famous as a filming location for scenes in the movie Dances with Wolves.
Tip: The trail is very popular, so arrive early in the day if you want to avoid crowds.
Stop at the trailhead for Spearfish Falls, a picturesque waterfall located behind the historic Savoy restaurant. A short, easy hike takes you down into a lush ravine to a viewing platform right in front of the falls. The trail is well-maintained and offers a peaceful walk.
Tip: Bring a good camera. The combination of the lush forest and the cascading water makes for a stunning photo opportunity.
Spearfish Canyon has numerous hiking trails that cater to all skill levels. From short, easy walks like the 3/4-mile Little Spearfish Trail to more challenging hikes, there is something for everyone. The trails often follow the creek, leading to waterfalls or scenic overlooks.
Tip: Be sure to wear proper hiking shoes, as some trails can be rocky or slippery.
The clear, cold waters of Spearfish Creek are a famous spot for fly-fishing. The creek is well-stocked with trout, and its easy accessibility from the scenic byway makes it a popular choice for anglers of all skill levels.
Tip: A valid South Dakota fishing license is required. You can purchase one at local sporting goods stores in the area.
The town of Spearfish at the northern end of the canyon is a charming and historic community. You can visit the D.C. Booth Historic Fish Hatchery, one of the oldest in the country, or simply explore the downtown area with its local shops and eateries.
