The South Shetland Islands lie just north of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Overview
The South Shetland Islands are a crescent-shaped archipelago located approximately 120 km (75 miles) north of the Antarctic Peninsula, serving as the first true taste of Antarctica for many expedition cruise passengers after crossing the legendary Drake Passage. This cluster of rugged, ice-covered islands, some with volcanic origins, is a haven for an astonishing abundance of Antarctic wildlife, making it a pivotal destination on almost every Antarctic itinerary.
These islands are not only geologically fascinating, boasting dramatic landscapes shaped by glaciers and volcanic activity (like the unique caldera of Deception Island), but they also teem with millions of penguins, vast colonies of seals, and a diverse array of seabirds. Historically significant for sealing and whaling, the South Shetlands now stand as a prime example of successful conservation efforts, offering an unparalleled opportunity for close-up wildlife encounters and immersive experiences in one of the planet's most pristine environments.
Venture into the unique, horseshoe-shaped caldera of Deception Island, an active volcano with a flooded interior forming a natural, sheltered harbor (Port Foster). Explore the remnants of an abandoned whaling station at Whalers Bay and potentially even take a geothermal "Polar Plunge" in the volcanically warmed waters at Pendulum Cove.
Tip: The warm waters at Pendulum Cove are highly dependent on recent volcanic activity and local conditions; ask your expedition staff for current possibilities.
Encounter vast numbers of penguins at various landing sites, including large colonies of Chinstrap, Gentoo, and Adélie penguins. Popular spots like Half Moon Island, Hannah Point (Livingston Island), and Barrientos Island offer incredible opportunities to observe their breeding behaviors, waddling on land, and diving in the water.
Tip: Always maintain a respectful distance from wildlife as instructed by your guides, and move slowly to avoid disturbing the birds.
Come face-to-face with numerous species of seals. You'll frequently spot Weddell seals resting on ice floes, Crabeater seals, and the massive Southern Elephant Seals hauled out on beaches. The agile and curious Antarctic Fur Seals are also common, especially during their breeding season.
Tip: Be cautious around large male elephant seals, especially during their molting season, and always follow your guide's instructions regarding safe distances from all seals.
Take exhilarating Zodiac inflatable boat cruises along the dramatic coastlines of the islands and through channels filled with various forms of ice. These cruises offer intimate views of icebergs, glacial fronts, and wildlife from a water-level perspective, often revealing hidden coves and bird nesting sites.
Tip: Dress in waterproof outer layers and bring waterproof bags for cameras and electronics, as splashes are common on Zodiac rides.
The South Shetland Islands are a haven for seabirds. Look out for the magnificent Giant Petrels, various species of albatrosses (such as the graceful Black-browed Albatross), Antarctic Terns, and the opportunistic South Polar Skuas soaring overhead or nesting on the cliffs.
Tip: Binoculars are highly recommended for detailed birdwatching, both from the ship and during landings.
Depending on the itinerary and National Park regulations, some expeditions may offer the chance to see or even briefly visit one of the international research stations on King George Island, the largest of the South Shetlands, often referred to as the "Capital of Antarctica" due to its numerous scientific bases.
Tip: Access to research stations is often limited and subject to operational requirements; appreciate the work of the scientists from a distance if a close visit isn't possible.
