South Plaza Island, though one of the smallest visitor sites in the Galapagos Archipelago, is an absolute powerhouse of unique wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Located off the eastern coast of Santa Cruz Island, this crescent-shaped island was formed by a geological uplift, resulting in striking cliffs on its southern side and a gentle slope towards the water on its northern shore. South Plaza is renowned for its vibrant, ever-changing vegetation – particularly the Sesuvium ground cover that transforms from lush green in the rainy season to spectacular hues of red, orange, and purple in the dry season. You'll see them basking in the sun, often seeking shade under the towering Opuntia cacti (prickly pear trees), waiting for the fallen pads and fruits to feed on. This is one of the best places to witness these endemic reptiles up close.
Tip: Keep an eye out for hybrid iguanas, a rare cross between land and marine iguanas, which can sometimes be spotted here!
Prepare for close encounters with a bustling colony of Galapagos sea lions. Upon landing, you'll often be greeted by them lounging on the rocks and sand. The island is also a known "bachelor pad" for male sea lions, so you might observe their playful or territorial interactions.
Tip: Maintain a respectful distance as instructed by your guide. While they appear docile, they are wild animals. Their barks and playful antics are captivating to watch.
Hike up to the island's southern cliffs for incredible birdwatching opportunities. This area is a prime nesting site for various seabirds, including Swallow-tailed Gulls (the only nocturnal gull in the world), Red-billed Tropicbirds, and sometimes Nazca Boobies or even Blue-footed Boobies soaring overhead.
Tip: Bring binoculars to get a closer look at the birds nesting on the rugged cliffs and observe their unique behaviors.
Capture the striking beauty of the island's Sesuvium vegetation. This succulent plant forms a carpet across the ground and famously changes color with the seasons – vibrant green during the wet season (roughly January-May) and vivid reds, oranges, and purples during the dry season (June-December), creating a stunning photographic landscape.
Tip: The contrast of the colorful plants against the blue ocean, black lava, and green cacti makes for truly unique photos.
Follow the trail as it gradually ascends to the cliff plateau on the island's south side. From this elevated position, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the sparkling turquoise channel, the nearby North Plaza Island, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
Tip: This viewpoint is also excellent for observing marine life in the waters below, such as schools of fish or even rays.
South Plaza is known for its dry landing, meaning you can step directly from your panga (dinghy) onto the rocks or a small dock without getting your feet wet. This makes for an easier and more comfortable start to your island exploration compared to wet landings common at other sites.
Tip: Even with a dry landing, comfortable closed-toe shoes with good grip are essential for walking the uneven, rocky trails.
