Wander through Sorrento's historic Old Town, a labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets filled with artisan workshops (especially for inlaid wood and ceramics), boutiques, and local cafes. Tip: Seek out the Chiostro di San Francesco (Cloister of St. Francis) for a peaceful escape and beautiful architecture, often hosting art exhibitions or concerts.
Sorrento is the birthplace of limoncello, a sweet and zesty lemon liqueur. Take the opportunity to taste this local specialty at one of the many shops or family-run distilleries. You can often learn about its production and purchase a bottle to take home.
Tip: Look for limoncello made from "Limone di Sorrento" for the most authentic flavor. Many shops offer free samples.
Descend to Marina Grande, Sorrento's traditional fishing village, distinct from the main cruise port (Marina Piccola). It offers a charming, authentic atmosphere with colorful fishing boats, excellent seafood restaurants directly on the water, and a small beach.
Tip: Enjoy a leisurely seafood lunch here; the fresh catch of the day is highly recommended. You can reach it by walking or a short bus ride from the town center.
From the cliff-top town center, reach the cruise tender drop-off point at Marina Piccola via a public elevator (lift), a local bus, or a scenic but steep series of steps (the Scala Fenicia). This offers panoramic views on the way down and up.
Tip: The public lift is the quickest and easiest option, especially if you have limited mobility or are short on time. There's a small fee.
Peer down into the dramatic Valley of the Mills (Vallone dei Mulini), a deep, verdant gorge hidden just off Piazza Tasso. This fascinating historical site features the ruins of an ancient mill and a sawmill, overgrown with lush vegetation, providing a unique glimpse into Sorrento's past.
Tip: There are several viewpoints from the streets around Piazza Tasso that offer excellent perspectives into the valley.
If your cruise offers ample time in port, Sorrento is an ideal base for excursions. Options include a quick ferry to the glamorous island of Capri (famous for the Blue Grotto and Faraglioni rocks) or a short train ride (Circumvesuviana) to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, remarkably preserved by volcanic ash from Mount Vesuvius.
