Tip: Look for the "Lodberrie," famous as Detective Jimmy Perez's house in the popular "Shetland" TV series, and enjoy souvenir shopping for authentic Shetland knitwear.
Journey back in time at Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement, one of Europe's most remarkable archaeological sites. Located at the southern tip of Mainland, it reveals layers of human habitation spanning over 4,000 years, from Stone Age houses to Iron Age brochs, Viking longhouses, and a medieval farm.
Tip: This site is a must-see for history enthusiasts. It's best accessed via an organized shore excursion from Lerwick due to its distance.
For an unparalleled archaeological experience, take a boat trip to the uninhabited island of Mousa to see the Mousa Broch. This is the best-preserved Iron Age broch (a circular drystone tower) in the world, standing over 13 meters (40 feet) tall and offering an incredible glimpse into ancient life.
Tip: Boat trips to Mousa are seasonal. Check with your cruise line or local operators. The experience of entering this ancient structure is truly unique.
Head to Sumburgh Head, Shetland's southernmost point, to witness a spectacular seabird colony. Perched on dramatic cliffs, you can observe thousands of puffins (in season), gannets, guillemots, razorbills, and fulmars. The site also features a historic lighthouse and a visitor center.
Tip: Puffins are typically present from late April to early August. Bring binoculars for the best views and be prepared for brisk winds.
Keep an eye out for the adorable and resilient Shetland ponies, often seen grazing freely by the roadside or in fields across the islands. These iconic small horses are a beloved symbol of Shetland. You may also spot other local wildlife, including seals and various bird species.
