Tip: Check if your cruise line offers a pre-booked excursion to the Castle of Mey, as this is a very popular attraction and can save you time on independent travel.
Take the short shuttle bus or taxi ride into Thurso, the most northerly town on the British mainland. Here, you can explore traditional shops, charming cafes, and spirited bars. Discover the ruins of Thurso Castle and visit the Thurso Heritage Museum for local history.
Tip: Thurso offers more amenities and services than Scrabster itself, making it a good base for finding souvenirs or enjoying a local meal.
Venture to Duncansby Head, the true northeastern tip of mainland Britain, a roughly 40-minute drive from Scrabster. Marvel at the dramatic sandstone cliffs and the iconic Duncansby Stacks, towering sea stacks that rise majestically from the churning waters. It's also an excellent spot for seabird watching.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes suitable for walking along coastal paths, as the terrain can be uneven. The views are spectacular, especially on a clear day.
Head to Dunnet Head, the actual most northerly point of mainland Britain (contrary to popular belief about John o' Groats). Here, you'll find a historic lighthouse and breathtaking panoramic views across the Pentland Firth to the Orkney Islands on a clear day. The cliffs are also home to diverse seabirds.
Tip: This location offers incredible photo opportunities, especially of the rugged coastline and the expansive sea.
While not the most northerly point, John o' Groats is famously known as one end of the longest distance between two inhabited points on the British mainland. It's a classic photo opportunity with its iconic signpost and a popular tourist village with shops. It's usually combined with a visit to Duncansby Head.
Tip: Expect it to be quite touristy, but it's a fun landmark to visit and get that quintessential "end of the road" photo.
Explore the rich heritage of the region by visiting a local distillery like Old Pulteney Distillery in Wick (approx. 30-minute drive), the most northerly mainland distillery, for a whisky tour and tasting. Alternatively, delve into local history at the Wick Heritage Centre, showcasing the town's past as a major herring port.
