Tip: The cable car can have long queues, especially during peak hours. Consider going early or late. The ride itself offers fantastic views.
Journey to Oia village, located on the northern tip of the island, famous globally for its unparalleled sunset views. Explore its charming alleys, visit art galleries, and find a prime spot along the cliffs to witness the magical display of colors as the sun dips below the horizon.
Tip: Oia gets extremely crowded at sunset. Arrive well in advance to secure a good viewing spot. Buses from Fira's central bus station are a popular and affordable option to reach Oia.
Discover Santorini's unique volcanic beaches, distinct from typical golden sands. Visit Red Beach near Akrotiri for its striking red cliffs and pebbles, or head to Perissa or Kamari on the east coast for long stretches of black volcanic sand with organized facilities.
Tip: The dark volcanic sand can get very hot; wear sturdy sandals or water shoes. Some beaches are accessible by local bus from Fira, while Red Beach requires a short walk from a drop-off point.
Embark on a boat tour into the caldera to visit the volcano (Nea Kameni islet) and swim in the therapeutic hot springs (Palea Kameni). These tours offer a unique perspective of the island's volcanic origins and geological wonders.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes for walking on the volcanic terrain and swimwear if you plan to enter the hot springs (the water can be sulphurous, so don't wear your best swimsuit).
Step back in time at the Akrotiri Archaeological Site, an ancient Minoan city preserved under volcanic ash for centuries, often referred to as the "Minoan Pompeii." Wander through the excavated streets and admire remarkably preserved multi-story buildings and frescoes.
Tip: This site is covered by a protective roof, making it a good option even on hot or slightly rainy days. A guided tour enhances the understanding of this fascinating ancient civilization.
Sample the island's unique wines, shaped by its volcanic soil, at one of Santorini's many wineries. The island is particularly known for its dry white wines like Assyrtiko. Many wineries offer tours and tastings with stunning views.
