Overview
Roskilde holds the history of the ancient Viking Era and is home to giant rock music festival, the Roskilde Festival. It sits in West Zealand, Denmark and west of Copenhagen. Roskilde was also the central hub for land and sea trade routes. This ancient city that means Ro s Spring was Denmark s capital for centuries (11th century 1443). There are natural springs on the slope down towards the harbor. One powerful spring in particular is Maglekilde filling 15,000 liters per hour and is protected by a wellhouse built in 1927. Travelers can explore the 12th century Roskilde Cathedral that seated their bishop, Roskilde Palace home to the Museum of Contemporary Art and Palace Wing, and trek the hilly Boserup Forest.
